Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We never knew her name, but Rick wished that he had her. Who was she?

Answer: Jessie's Girl

Rick Springfield could for sure get any girl--even if he wasn't really Dr. Noah Drake. "Jessie's Girl" was released on March 17, 1981.
2. I'm pretty sure Ian made this the only cross-eyed girl to ever get mentioned in a song of any kind. Who was she?

Answer: Mary

Ian Anderson wrote a great song, but I have never figured out exactly why. I'm sure there was a social commentary there that was too deep for me. "Cross-Eyed Mary" was released by Jethro Tull in 1971.
3. Well, maybe the Davies boys were as confused as the boy in this song. Who almost broke a spine?

Answer: Lola

Ray Davies said that this song was inspired after he watched his road manager spend the night dancing with a transvestite. At 6:00 AM the next morning, Ray asked his manager if he had noticed the beard stubble that had appeared.
4. Rod was gonna make a living playing pool to get over whom?

Answer: Maggie May

For a B-side song, "Maggie May" did pretty well, essentially launching Rod Stewart's solo career. He said the song was based on life experience (not hard to believe), and he claimed to be amused that it did so well.
5. It is just your foolish pride if you don't know Derek's lost love.

Answer: Layla

It's shocking to realize Eric Clapton's song "Layla" never made it to number one, and even more shocking to realize that it was two years old when it finally made the top ten. What were people thinking--or were they even thinking?
6. John Prine was told by this lady that he had no complaints. Who told him that?

Answer: Dear Abby

John wrote this ditty, and even hippies knew who Dear Abby was for a while. It sure didn't hurt either of their careers. "Dear Abby" came out in 1973.
7. Before there was a brown-eyed girl, the band Them (is that correct grammar?) could spell this girl's name. Can you?

Answer: Gloria

Van Morrison was the singer for the band Them before he took his talents solo, but he sure left a legacy for Them. The song "Gloria" was released in 1964.
8. Jimi heard the wind whisper her name, but did you hear it? You could, when it cries.

Answer: Mary

Jimi Hendrix was supposedly inspired to write "The Wind Cries Mary" after an argument he had with his girlfriend. Apologies and regrets surely have brought about a ton of great songs; after all, men find it hard to say sorry.
9. Steely Dan knew a lot of party girls, but who prayed like a Roman with fiery eyes?

Answer: Josie

The song "Josie" has created a great many discussions as to what it's about. I offer no opinions- you have to form your own. "Josie" was a track on the 1977 album "Aja".
10. Donovan found that he couldn't blame whom for her lot in life?

Answer: Lalena

Donovan said that he wrote the song "Lalena" about a character in "Threepenny Opera" played by Lotte Lenya, and the title was a take-off on her name. This should put to rest the notion that it was written about a real prostitute. In fact, the prostitute was a character, Jenny Diver, in the play.
