Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1974 Fleetwood Mac song referencing a Welsh goddess

Answer: Rhiannon

Stevie Nicks got the idea to write this song from the novel "Triad", written by Mary Bartlet Leader. In the book the main female character is possessed by Rhiannon. Although inspired by the story to write the song, Nicks did not know that Rhiannon was a goddess until after the song was written.

The song made the Rolling Stone Magazine list of "The Greatest 500 Songs of All Time", coming in at number 488.
2. Barry Manilow sang "you kissed me and stopped me from shaking" to this girl

Answer: Mandy

"Mandy" became Manilow's first number one hit on the Billboard charts. The song was first recorded, by Scott English, under the title "Brandy" but Manilow changed the title to keep the song from being confused with the hit song "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)", by Looking Glass.
3. Tom Jones sang about this girl who shared a name with Samson's lover

Answer: Delilah

This song's lyrics speak of love, betrayal, and murder. It became a number one hit, in several countries, and reached number 15 on the Billboard charts. The song has been controversial; sometimes facing censorship because of its lyrics and has had at least one legal challenge regarding who wrote the lyrics.
4. A Simon and Garfunkel song that refers to the Catholic patron saint of music

Answer: Cecilia

Paul Simon wrote this song and some say it refers to a lyricist's frustration of trying to overcome "writer's block". It spent 13 weeks on the Billboard Top 100 list, peaking at number four.

St Cecilia was a second century martyr who reportedly requested, while dying, that a church be built at the site of her home. Pope Urban I granted that request in the 3rd century.
5. Tony Orlando sang this hit song with the group Dawn, which had never performed together

Answer: Candida

Orlando was asked to record the song but could not use his name on the song because, at the time, he was working as a manager for a competing record company. After being assured his name would not be used, Orlando recorded the song over pre-recorded tracks, not knowing the background singers. In July 1970, "Candida" was released under the fictional band name "Dawn". It became a hit reaching the number one spot in five countries and finishing at number thrree in the Billboard Top 100 list.

The success of the song motivated Orlando to want to put a "real" band together and tour. He recruited backup singers Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vinton Wilson and the trio eventually became known as Tony Orlando and Dawn. The trio was popular during the 70s and even had its own TV variety show from 1974 to 1976.
6. Originally called "Beck" it became KISS's biggest US commercial hit

Answer: Beth

Kiss drummer Peter Criss, Bob Ezrin and Stan Penridge are the writers of "Beth". The name of the song was changed because it was thought that Beth was easier to sing then Beck. Released as a single in 1976, the gold certified song received a People's Choice Award in 1977 for favorite song and was ranked as the third best power ballad of all time by VH1's "25 Best Power Ballads".
7. Kenny Rogers' song about a woman who leaves him with "four hungry children and a crop in the field'

Answer: Lucille

"Lucille" was Rogers' first number one hit as a solo artist. It was a number one hit on the Billboard Country Charts and number five on the Billboard Top 100 chart. The song was chosen as "Song of the Year" by the Academy of Country Music and by the Country Music Association.

It was released in 1977. Rogers reportedly got the idea for the lyrics from a news report he saw on an Oklahoma TV station almost 20 years earlier.
8. Pure Prairie League song that is often segued into from the song "Fallin' in and Out of Love"

Answer: Amie

"Amie" initially appeared in a 1972 Pure Prairie League album with little success. However, three years later, the song gained popularity on college campuses and RCA re-signed the band to a recording contract and released "Amie" as a single. Written by Pure Prairie League original member Craig Fuller, the song went to number 20 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary charts.
9. Dolly Parton begs this lady to not take her man "just because you can"

Answer: Jolene

"Jolene" was released as a single in 1973. Parton says the idea for the song came from a red-headed bank teller that was flirting with her husband shortly after their wedding. It was her second number one hit on Billboard's US Country Songs chart and became a top ten hit in the UK, South Africa and Canada.
10. Appeared on the Rolling Stones "Goats Head Soup" album. It's not about a "Police Woman" actress

Answer: Angie

"Angie" was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The song reached number one in nine different countries and was number five in the UK singles chart. Although many have speculated about who Angie was, Richards has been quoted as saying the name was chosen at random.
11. Steely Dan song about a girl whose name could also be defined as a "dowel"

Answer: Peg

"Peg" is a song about a young actress looking for her big break. Although denied by band members, some speculate that the song is about a young actress, Peg Entwistle, who jumped to her death off the Hollywoodland sign in 1924. The song reached number 11 on the Billboard Top 100 charts.
12. Toto sings that all they want to do in the morning "is see her eyes" and that they will "meet you all the way"

Answer: Rosanna

The album "Rosanna" won a Grammy for record of the year in 1983. The song by the same name was nominated for song of the year. The song never made the top spot in Billboard's Top 100 Songs chart but was number two for five consecutive weeks.
13. The Oak Ridge Boys sing "Giddy up, oom poppa, oom poppa, mow mow" in this song.

Answer: Elvira

"Elvira" was written and performed by country singer Dallas Frazier in 1966. Reportedly the title did not come from the name of a woman but from the name of a street in Nashville. Fifteen years later the song was recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and number five on the Billboard pop chart (Hot 100).
14. Maggie Smith won an Academy Award for playing Miss Brodie in a film that featured this song.

Answer: Jean

The song was written and performed by American poet and song-writer Rod McKuen in the movie "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". His song was nominated for an Academy Award as "best original song" but McKeun's recording of the song was not successful. However, the song was also recorded by American singer, Oliver. Oliver's recording of the ballad reached number two on the pop charts and was a number one hit on Billboard's adult contemporary chart.
15. This song by The Association will also remind you of a nickname for Chicago

Answer: Windy

"Windy' was written by Ruthann Friedman. Some people say Friedman originally wrote the song about a male songwriter she was acquainted with. Other people say she has denied that it was about a man but about a totally fictional woman. She reportedly wrote the song in less than 30 minutes.

The Association recorded the song in 1967. It became the number one pop song on the Billboard Top 100 chart
