Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with the song from the quiz title. What's the next word in the chorus following the line "The only way is up" in the song of the same name?

Answer: Baby

Yazz and the Plastic Population made the song famous when they released it in 1988. It was, however, written several years prior by George Jackson and Johnny Henderson, and originally released in 1980 by Soul artist Otis Clay.
2. Where did Petula Clark suggest that you can go "When you're alone and life is making you lonely"?

Answer: Downtown

Written by Tony Hatch and first performed by Petula Clark in 1964, "Downtown" hit number one in the US and number two in the UK.
3. In which direction is love, according to a song performed by Wet Wet Wet on the "Four Weddings and a Funeral" movie soundtrack?

Answer: All around

Reg Presely wrote "Love is All Around" for his band, The Troggs, who first released it in 1967. While the Wet Wet Wet version was by far the most successful release (charting at number one in the UK for 15 weeks), the band R.E.M. also recorded a version.
4. Which direction did the Village People tell us to go in 1979, along with the Pet Shop Boys in 1993?

Answer: West

The lyrics of "Go West" are thought to reflect the sentiment at the time that people who want to be accepted in the gay community should head to San Francisco. It's also thought to have been inspired by the Horace Greeley quote, "Go West, young man", relating to the colonization of the American West.
5. According to Albert Hammond, it never rains in which part of California?

Answer: The south

Despite its seemingly upbeat title, "It Never Rains in Southern California" actually goes on to say "It never rains in California, but girl don't they warn ya. It pours, man it pours." Hammond wrote this song about a would-be songwriter who travels to Hollywood to try and make it big but finds it all too difficult.
6. The Yardbirds released a song in 1966 that brought together several directions just in its title. What was it called?

Answer: Over Under Sideways Down

"Over Under Sideways Down" reflected the mood of the 1960s, where personal freedom and generally having a good time (often with the assistance of various substances) were glorified.
7. Which direction is the title of a song by both Blink-182 and Pearl Jam?

Answer: Down

The Pearl Jam version of "Down" is from the "Lost Dogs" album released in 1993. The Blink-182 song was released ten years later in 2003. The latter has more of an upbeat feel, being about a boy trying to convince a girl to stay around while it rains "down, down, down". The Pearl Jam version is about someone who's not feeling very good about themselves.
8. Which Jonas Brothers song is about going against the flow?

Answer: Turn Right

From the 2009 album, "Lines, Vines and Trying Times", this song was inspired by racecar drivers turning left and the idea that going the other way might make life more interesting.
9. In the 1980s classic ballad, where did Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes want to go with the subject of the song?

Answer: Up where we belong

"Up Where We Belong" was recorded for the soundtrack of the film "An Officer and a Gentleman" in 1982. It is played during the climactic scene where the hero (Zack) arrives at his girl's factory and carries her dramatically away.
10. When you're doing the "Hokey Pokey" (sometimes known as the "Hokey Cokey"), does your right hand go in before your left?

Answer: Yes

Like many traditional songs, the "Hokey Pokey" origins are uncertain. Some suggest it was derived from "hocus pocus"; others suggest it was written by miners to pass the time; and still others say it's of old dance-hall origins (and there are many other theories!). Whatever the origin, the song comes with a catchy tune and fun movements, and is enjoyed around the world.
