Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. French chanteuse Vanessa Paradis had a number three hit in the UK with the single 'Joe Le Taxi' which was entirely sung in French. Five years later she had another top ten hit with which song, this time sung in English?

Answer: Be My Baby

Vanessa Paradis was only fourteen when she released 'Joe Le Taxi' in 1987. The song tells the tale of a saxophone-playing Parisian taxi driver who dreams of visiting the Amazon. 'Joe Le Taxi' topped the chart in Paradis' native France for eleven weeks and, unusually for a song sung entirely in French, it reached number three in the UK singles chart.

In 1992 Paradis moved to the USA to work with Lenny Kravitz and recorded her first album on which all the songs were sung in English. This self-titled album yielded the song 'Be My Baby' which would become Vanessa Paradis' only other UK top forty hit, peaking at number six in the singles chart.
2. Deep Blue Something had a number one hit in 1996 with 'Breakfast at Tiffany's but you might be surprised to hear that this was not their only visit to the top forty. Which girl's name was the title of their song which reached number twenty-seven in 1996?

Answer: Josey

Often considered a quintessential one-hit wonder, Deep Blue Something formed in 1992 in Texas and finally split in 2001. They are almost universally known for their worldwide hit 'Breakfast at Tiffanys' which reached the upper reaches of the charts in a number of countries including their native USA and which topped the chart in the UK.

However, they remained a one-hit wonder in most countries where 'Breakfast at Tiffanys' had been a hit. It was only in the UK where they were able to score a second, if more modest hit, with Josey. 'Breakfast at Tiffany's and 'Josey' were both taken from the album 'Home'.
3. Chesney Hawkes enjoyed his first and only UK number one hit in 1991 with 'The One and Only' but what was the name of his only other top forty hit which reached the singles chart later that year?

Answer: I'm A Man Not A Boy

Chesney Hawkes was born in Swindon in 1971 and he first came to public attention when he starred in the film 'Buddy's Song' when he was just nineteen. He went on to score a number one hit with 'The One and Only' which was taken from the film's soundtrack. Chesney Hawkes went on to record numerous songs over the next twenty years but the only song to trouble the UK top forty singles chart was 'I'm A Man Not A Boy', which was the follow-up to 'The One and Only' and which was also featured on the 'Buddy's Song' soundtrack and which peaked at twenty-seven on the chart.
4. Disco band Baccara had a number one hit in the UK in 1977 with 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie' and followed it up the following year with which song which was to be their only other UK top forty hit?

Answer: Sorry I'm A Lady

Spanish female Euro disco duo Baccara had a hit all over Europe with their summer smash 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie' which topped the chart in numerous European countries including the UK. Such was the phenomenal success of 'Yes Sir, I Can Boogie' that, by the end of 1977, the Guinness Book of Records named Baccara as the best-selling female musical duo of all time.

They were both the first female duo and the first Spanish act to top the UK singles chart. However, while Baccara continued to grace the charts in several other European countries they would achieve their only other UK top forty hit with 'Sorry I'm A lady' which reached the top twenty in 1978.

In 1978 Baccara were chosen to represent Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest.
5. Sandi Thom had a number one hit in the UK in 2006 with 'I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)' but this was not her only chart appearance. What was the name of her follow-up single which reached number 22 in the chart the same year?

Answer: What If I'm Right

Born Alexandria Thom in Scotland in 1981, Sandi Thom scored a surprise number one hit in the UK with her debut single 'I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)' in 2006. Thom has released five studio albums but her only other singles chart appearance was achieved by 'What If I'm Right', the follow-up single to 'Punk Rocker', released the same year as it's more successful predecessor. 'Punk Rocker' became the best-selling single of 2006 in Australia.
6. English pop and new wave performer Jona Lewie is best known for his perennial Christmas hit 'Stop the Cavalry' which was released in November and 1980 and reached number three in the UK singles chart. However, this was not his first visit to the top twenty as he had had a number sixteen hit earlier in the same year with which song?

Answer: You'll Always Find Me in the Kitchen At Parties

Jona Lewie was born John Lewis in Southampton in 1947. Lewie joined his first band while at school and embarked on a full-time music career shortly after leaving school. After spending many years as a hard-working musician and song-writer Jona Lewie's solo music career received a significant boost when he was signed to the influential Stiff Records label in 1977.

In 1980 his quirky synth pop ditty 'You'll Always Find Me in the Kitchen At Parties' became a top twenty hit but it was Lewie's next single 'Stop the Cavalry' which would really establish his reputation.

Although 'Stop the Cavalry' wasn't initially conceived as a specifically Christmas-themed song, it has become a staple of festive playlists on radio stations and in shops all over the UK.

While 'Stop the Cavalry' was Lewie's last top forty appearance in the UK he enjoyed considerably more success in other European countries such as Germany and the Netherlands.
7. While many people will be familiar with Falco's international smash hit 'Rock Me Amadeus' which topped numerous singles charts all over the world, including in the UK, his follow-up hit, a paean to his home-city, is less well-known. Do you know the name of Falco's other UK top forty hit which peaked at number ten in 1986?

Answer: Vienna Calling

Falco was born Johann Holzel in Vienna in 1957 and scored an international hit with 1985's 'Rock Me Amadeus' which saw him topping the singles chart in the UK and USA as well as a number of other countries. He became the first German-speaking performer to gain a vocal number one hit in the USA and is the best-selling Austrian pop artist of all time.

After 'Vienna Calling' appeared in the top ten in 1986 Falco would not achieve any further hits in the UK or USA though he continued to have numerous hits in Europe, particularly in German-speaking countries.
8. Lesley Gore is best remembered in the UK for her 1963 hit single 'It's My Party' but she did manage one more chart entry, reaching the top twenty in 1964 with which song?

Answer: Maybe I Know

Lesley Gore was born Lesley Sue Goldstein in New York City in 1946. She had her first hit in 1963 with 'It's My Party' which entered charts all over the world. Gore went on to have a series of American chart hits through the early to mid 1960s which included the sequel to 'It's My Party', 'Judy's Turn to Cry', and the feminist anthem 'You Don't Own Me.

Although she continued making music for the rest of herlife she began to concentrate on song-writing and arranging from the late 1960s onwards. 'It's My Party' reached number nine in the UK singles chart in 1963 and is still fondly remembered while Gore's only other British chart hit 'Maybe I Know' has largely faded into obscurity.
9. In 1994 Swedish Europop band Rednex reached number one in the UK with the single 'Cotton Eye Joe', given their gimicky sound they might have appeared to be a prime candidate for one-hit wonder status but they managed to avoid this fate by notching up one more hit when which oddly named track reached number twelve in the British singles chart in 1995?

Answer: Old Pop in an Oak

Rednex music was a unique blend of Eurodance, pop, techno and American country which I would personally describe as virtually unlistenable! Still, I was clearly out of step with modern tastes as 'Cotton Eye Joe' became a huge hit all over Europe and, such was the British public's taste for this particular foul concoction that they also bought the band's even more unpleasant follow-up 'Old Pop in an Oak' in their droves. Luckily for me this signalled the end of Rednex short-lived chart dominance in the UK though radio stations still play 'Cotton Eye Joe' from time to time.
10. Canadian performer Terry Jacks had a global hit with 1973's 'Seasons in the Sun' which reached the top spot in the British charts in 1974 but this was not the end of his UK chart career as he managed one more chart hit, just a few months later, with which song?

Answer: If You Go Away

Terry Jacks was born in Manitoba in 1944 and began his music career in the early 1960s. Towards the end of the 60s he formed The Poppy Family with his future wife Susan Pesklevits who enjoyed chart success in both their native Canada and neighbouring USA but it was with 1973's 'Seasons in the Sun' that Jacks came to worldwide attention.

The song was loosely based on the Jacques Brel composition 'Le Moribond'. 'Seasons in the Sun' reached number one in a number of countries including the UK and USA and set a record at the time for the best-selling single by a Canadian artist of all time. Jacks other UK top forty hit 'If You Go Away', which reached number eight in the chart in 1974, was also based on a Jacques Brel song entitled 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'.

Although Jacks never had another UK hit he did continue to write and record music although he began to focus more on production work for other artists.
