Paul Anka was a successful American/Canadian singer and songwriter, known for his songs "Lonely Boy" and "Puppy Love". It is believed that he wrote "Diana" after a girl he once had a crush on and the song became popular on both sides of the Atlantic as well as Australia. Anka was also credited with writing the theme song for "The Tonight Show" hosted by Johnny Carson, and the lyrics to "My Way" made famous by Frank Sinatra.

The song reached number one in the UK singles chart in 1972. It was a tribute to Vincent van Gogh and his 1889 masterpiece, "The Starry Night". American singer Don McLean was so influenced by the artist that he wrote the lyrics which mention the artist's sanity and taking his own life, as well as the beauty of his art. McLean also wrote the 1971 song, "American Pie" after being influenced by the death Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper during the same air crash.
