Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This virtual illegitimate son of The King - although he mostly sounds as if Elvis is lying in a gutter, blind drunk, swearing unintelligible - sang about his "Pant Leg". What groundbreaking album by which genre-defying band was this song on?

Answer: "Extra Width" - Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

"Extra Width" was released in 1993. Spencer's trouser mania didn't end there though. On his "Orange" album - released in 1994 - he sang the praise of those most dreaded of threads: "Bellbottoms". He even went as far as describing them as 'fabulous, most groovy. Ungh!'
2. When you want to appear cool and dandy, what do you need? A trouser press of course. What legendary freaks praised its existence? Though judging by the looks of them, they never even went near one.

Answer: The Bonzo Dog 'Doo Dah' Band

By the time of the release of the album "The Doughnuts in Granny's Greenhouse" (1968) - on which the song "Trouser Press" appears - the band had removed the 'Doo Dah' part of their name, to appear more palatable to the general public. "Trouser Press" also provided inspiration for some Americans when they started a music magazine and needed a name.

The band later recorded another pants song, "Trouser Freak", which was included on the CD re-release of their 1972 album "Let's Make Up & Be Friendly".

Their biggest hit, "I'm the Urban Spaceman", was produced by Paul McCartney, who used the pseudonym Apollo C. Vermouth.
3. This anarcho-agitpop combo somehow entered the pop charts all over the world with a catchy send-up of lager lads in 1997. A few years later they released the album "What You See Is What You Get", featuring a song about a particular kind of trousers: "Knickers".

Answer: Chumbawamba

Chumbawamba was formed in 1984 - the same year Crass split up. Coincidence? Not likely. We need at least one band with a conscience somewhere out there.
4. Apart from the 'Ant Rap', the 'Wham Rap' and the 'Mouset Rap' there's also the 'Panty Rap'. This song appears on an album called "Tinseltown Rebellion". Who released it?

Answer: Frank Zappa

"Panty Rap" is a live track in which Zappa asks the women in the audience to pass along their bras and panties. "We are making a quilt" he says. However, he did not make the quilt himself, but gave the underwear to artist Emily James. Her quilt portrayed Zappa as the queen of spades.
5. What was the kind of trousers preferred by the band that was called Madness?

Answer: Baggy Trousers

"Baggy Trousers" was one of Madness' greatest hits. It appeared on their second album, "Absolutely", released in October 1980. Madness was quite famous for their hilarious video promo's. However, sax player Lee Thompson hated making them, because he was always suspended from wires or thrown into swimming pools.
6. James Brown, without a doubt the hardest working man in show business, had a little fetish for a certain kind of trouser. What kind?

Answer: Hot Pants

"Hot Pants" appeared on the 1971 album of the same title. It was Brown's first album with the second incarnation of his band, The JB's. Instead of bass player Bootsy Collins, trombonist Fred Wesley became the bandleader, which meant a serious shift in sound. But always funky!
7. When the manager of this band, a chap named Leggy Mountbatten, first heard them play, he completely hated them. But when he took a glimpse at their trousers he decided to take a chance on them nevertheless. Which band subsequently became a legend in their own lunchtime?

Answer: The Rutles

The Rutles was a non-existent band, who nevertheless made a few really great records. Eric Idle (Monty Python member) and Neil Innes (member of Bonzo Dog Band and occasional Python-collaborator) turned their love for the Beatles and for a good laugh into The Rutles.

In 1978 they released a film called "The Rutles - All You Need Is Cash" in which they told the story of the 'pre-fab four', a band with a remarkably similar career trajectory to The Beatles. Neil Innes wrote the songs, Beatles-parodies that came really close to eclipsing the originals.

In 1996 they reformed, without Eric Idle, to release the 'Archeology' album, as a reply of sorts to the Beatles' 'Anthology' records.
8. What does one often find inside ones' pants? A "Trouser Snake" of course. Which warped mind devoted a track on this mythological beast, released on Warp records of course?

Answer: Rubber Johnny

"Trouser Snake" appeared on the "Jamrolypoly" EP, released in 1997. Who was Rubber Johnny, no-one knows ...
9. Although most of Eric Clapton's solo career could be described as 'a load of pants', it was with one of his bands that he got the "Bell Bottom Blues". Which band?

Answer: Derek and the Dominos

"Bell Bottom Blues" appeared on "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" (1970), the only studio album the band released.
10. One of the most popular kind of trousers are of course blue jeans. Underneath you'll find 4 lists of artists who have all sang the praises of the jean, except for one. Which 3 artists don't like jeans enough to pen an ode to it?

Answer: Beck, Biohazard and Suicide

So, what exactly did those bands sing about blue jeans and where can you find the songs? Ladytron: "Blue Jeans" on "Light & Magic" (2002). Blur: "Blue Jeans" on "Modern Life is Rubbish" (1993). Jeru The Damaja: "Blue Jean (Safe Sex)" on "Heroz4Hire" (1999). Gene Vincent: "Bluejean Bop!" on "Bluejean Bop!" (1956). Dr. Hook: "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk" (1982). Shocking Blue: "Blue Jean" on "Ink Pot" (1972). ZZ Top: "Blue Jean Blues" on "Fandango" (1975). Royal Fingers: "Blue Jean, No.1" on "Wild Eleki Deluxe" (2001). Divine: "T-Shirts and Tight Blue Jeans" can be found on several 'Best Of' albums and was one of the tracks written for Divine by legendary NY postpunk-disco producer Bobby Orlando.
