Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What period is Organum from?

Answer: Medieval

Leonin, the choir director of Notre Dame, was the leading composer of two part Organum. The Motet was developed from Organum.
2. During which period did Thomas Morley compose?

Answer: Renaissance

Thomas Morley was famous for his English madrigals, the popular secular music of the era.
3. Jazz was developed in which major era?

Answer: Modern

Jazz is the first truly American mainstream music form. I know many of you will protest this, but from what I've found, other "American" forms are adaptions or mergers of European styles. For instance, the marching band comes from the French and British military bands. American has more to do with style and form than content. Sousa and Copland wrote very American music, but it still comes from European forms.

Many people are probably saying now that Jazz definitely has outside influences too, let me explain further. Jazz has influences from outside, all music does, but Jazz has a unique form that was developed in the United States, while other "American" forms are much more direct adaptions of European music.
4. During which period did both the Solo Concerto and Symphony become popular?

Answer: Classical

The orchestra was used mainly for accompaniment until the end of the Baroque, and really became popular in the Classical Period.
5. During which period did Franz Liszt compose?

Answer: Romantic

Liszt was best known for his "Hungarian Rhapsodies." These were characterized by extreme dynamic contrasts and ornamantation.
6. During which period did Franz Josef Haydn compose music?

Answer: Classical

Haydn is know as the "Father of the Symphony." He championed new forms.
7. Which era did Guillaume de Machaut compose in?

10. Which period did the Oratorio first appear in? (It was so popular, it is still used today.)

Answer: Baroque

Oratorio can have sacred or secular text. The text is narrative, unlike the Cantata, where the text is contemplative. Handel's "Messiah," from the Baroque era, is one of the most famous Oratorios.
