"Time In A Bottle", written by Jim Croce, was number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for him in 1973. It did not chart in the UK.

Jim Croce was born James Joseph Croce in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1943. He started to get serious about music while attending Villanova University, Pennsylvania, where he majored in psychology and minored in German and graduated with a Bachelor degree in 1965. While there he was a member of the Villanova Singers and the Villanova Spires.

In 1966 he got married and released his first album financed by a wedding gift of £500 from his parents. He also enlisted in the Army National Guard to avoid being drafted and deployed to Vietnam. After his career took off and he started touring he became more and more homesick over the years and wanted to take a complete break from music. This was planned to take place after his "Life and Times" tour in 1973.

Croce performed a concert at Northwestern State University's Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, Louisiana, on Thursday September 20 1973. He and others were then flying to Sherman, Texas, for a concert at Austin College. They died when the chartered Beechcraft E18S they were flying in crashed while taking off from the Natchitoches Regional Airport. An investigation placed the sole blame for the crash on pilot error.
