Answer: Phoebe Ann Mosley

The family name is a little confusing. Annie's brother John insisted the family name was Moses with Annie herself insisting it was Mosey. Other variations of the surname used are Mosley and Mozee.

Answer: Annie never told anyone their name

Ann never revealed the name of the family and referred to them as the wolves. She adopted the name Oakley from the kind gentleman who bought her a train ticket after hearing of the abuse she suffered at the hands of the family.

Frank Butler, made a name for himself as a sharpshooter and was part of the Baughman & Butler shooting act which toured the country. The act was performing in Cincinnati when he boasted he could beat any other sharpshooter. He found it amusing when Annie stepped forward for the challenge which he willingly accepted. Butler promptly lost, hitting 24 of the 25 targets while Annie hit all 25.

In 1903, William Randolph Hearst accused Annie of being a drug addict and thief in his newspaper. She decided to fight Hearst in court along with other newspapers who printed the same lies. She won her case and Hearst was ordered to pay her $27,000 but the other newspapers retracted their stories.

A steamboat carrying the performers sank in the Mississippi River this had a great effect on Bogardus who left the show shortly afterwards leaving a place for Annie.

Chief Sitting Bull, was so impressed with Annie's shooting abilities he wanted to adopt her as his daughter and gave her the name, Watanya Cicilla meaning Little Sure Shot.
