Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Music: the New Zealand musician Pip Brown performs under which stage name, taken from a fantasy film about a magical bird?

Answer: Ladyhawke

Before Ladyhawke, Pip Brown played with the garage band Two Lane Blacktop. She released her self-titled debut album as Ladyhawke in 2008. She was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome as an adult, after going to see a doctor about her fear of crowds.
2. Video games: Satoshi Tajiri is the mastermind behind a long-running series of video games - and associated merchandise - that involve the capture and training of magical creatures; you've gotta catch 'em all, in fact. Its full title is 'Pocket Monsters', but by which name is it better known?

Answer: Pokemon

Like Ash Ketchum, the hero of the Pokemon games, and many other people with Asperger's Syndrome, Satoshi Tajiri was an avid collector as a child, although he collected insects rather than cute little monsters. According to an article on famous people on the autistic spectrum (http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-autistics-known-today.php), Nintendo representatives described Tajiri as 'eccentric' and 'reclusive'. (Pocky, by the way, is actually a brand of sweet.)
3. Animals: the anthropologist Dawn Prince-Hughes stated that observing a group of apes in the wild made it easier for her to understand and socialise with other people. What type of apes did she study?

Answer: Gorillas

Dawn Prince-Hughes was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of thirty-six. She wrote 'Songs of the Gorilla Nation: My Journey Through Autism' about her experiences working with gorillas at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, after becoming fascinated by them.

She has stated that she learned to pick up social cues, which many people with Asperger's find difficult, by watching the gorillas interact.
4. Crime: which Scottish-born hacker, diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and known as 'Solo', was arrested in 2002 for allegedly hacking into Pentagon and NASA computers?

Answer: Gary McKinnon

Gary McKinnon is alleged to have hacked into 97 computers over a period of 13 months, and at the time of writing (March 2012) is appealing against extradition to the United States. He was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2008. Lamo and Berkovich have also been confirmed to be on the autistic spectrum. Julian Assange, suspected of having Asperger's Syndrome himself, called it the 'hacker's disease'.
5. Science: what did Temple Grandin invent to help calm people on the autistic spectrum down?

Answer: A squeeze machine that gives people artificial hugs

Diagnosed with autism in 1950, Temple Grandin came up with the idea of the squeeze machine, or 'hug box', as a way of calming an autistic and/or hypersensitive person down without the need for bodily contact, and the risk of too much or too little pressure.

She got the idea from observing cattle being placed in a similar device, which subsequently soothed them. The squeeze machine can be customised to apply different amounts of pressure, and there are even websites with instructions for making your own.
6. Languages: Daniel Tammet, one of a small number of real-life autistic savants, speaks nine languages in addition to his native English. He also invented his own language, Mänti. To which language can it be described as being most similar?

Answer: Finnish

'Mänti' is Finnish for 'pine tree', and several Mänti words bear similarities to Estonian and Finnish words. Finnish is one of the languages Tammet - born Daniel Corney - speaks, along with Romanian, Esperanto, Lithuanian, Icelandic, Welsh, and the more commonly-taught French, German and Spanish.

Not only does he have remarkable language-learning abilities, he can also recite pi to 22,514 decimal places.
7. Art: in the 1990s, the Scottish artist Peter Howson painted several pictures chronicling events of a conflict, which earned him the reputation of 'official war artist'. Where did this conflict take place?

Answer: Bosnia

Peter Howson travelled to Bosnia to document the war, under the sponsorship of "The Times". His 'Bosnia' exhibition in 1994 caused controversy due to one particularly graphic painting, 'Croatian and Muslim', which depicted a violent rape, and was based on victims' accounts.

His art has also featured on the covers of albums by the Beautiful South and Live, and his fans included Mick Jagger and Madonna, who has featured in some of his paintings. Both he and his daughter have Asperger's Syndrome.
8. Sport: although people on the autistic spectrum are stereotyped as having little to no interest in sports, there are a number of sportspeople on the spectrum. One of such people is Clay Marzo, a Hawaiian athlete known for his prowess in a certain water sport - but which one?

Answer: Surfing

Clay Marzo was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2007. Fascinated with seashells at an early age, he started out as a swimmer, but later became interested in surfing. He admits to finding interviews difficult, and has worked with Surfers Healing, an organisation that aims to introduce autistic children and their families to surfing.
9. Television: the tenth series of "American Idol" was the first to feature a finalist with Asperger's Syndrome, James Durbin, a keen rock music fan. Which of these songs did he not perform during his stint on the show?

Answer: 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana

It was Casey Abrams who performed the Nirvana song.

James Durbin was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome after the death of his father. As well as Asperger's, he also has Tourette's Syndrome. During the finale, he performed 'Livin' After Midnight' and 'Breaking The Law' with Judas Priest. Since his appearance on American Idol, he has gone on to release an album, 'Memories of a Beautiful Disaster'.
10. Film: which English actor, who played the role of Joy Division's manager Rob Gretton in 24 Hour Party People, was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 36?

Answer: Paddy Considine

Paddy Considine's other films include 'Hot Fuzz', 'In America' and 'A Room for Romeo Brass'. He also appeared in the video for Coldplay's 'G-d Put A Smile Upon Your Face'. In an interview with the Telegraph, he talked about his problems with sensory overload caused by bright lights and noise, and interaction with people.

In '24 Hour Party People', Steve Coogan played Tony Wilson, the owner of Factory Records, while Andy Serkis played the producer Martin Hannett, and Sean Harris played Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis.
