Answer: Kylie Minogue

Kylie started on the Australian soapie, 'Neighbours', in 1986 as Charlene Mitchell. Her marriage to Scott Robinson (played by Jason Donovan) drew huge ratings in Australia and the UK. She won several Logies, Australia's television awards, and was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008. She battled breast cancer and won.

Dame Nellie Melba was an opera singer and never appeared in a soapie, as she died in 1931. Julie Anthony is one of Australia's better known singers, and Kate Ceberano is a wonderful talent from Melbourne.
2. All of these men were born in Victoria and all were Federal politicians. Three of them were also Prime Ministers of Australia, but who never held the top post?

Answer: Arthur Calwell

Calwell was Leader of the Labor Party (1960-67), in opposition to the giant of politics, Sir Robert Menzies. Deakin was the second Prime Minister and was PM three times in the first decade of the 1900s. Bruce was born in Melbourne, and his middle name is Melbourne! He was PM from 1923 to 1929. Fraser won four elections and his term was 1975 to 1983.
3. Andrew Gaze represented his country in five separate Olympic Games. He played his chosen sport from the age of 18, and grew to be a superstar of the game in Australia. He played for a year in Italy and spent a couple of seasons in the USA, before retiring in 2000. What sport did he play so well?

Answer: Basketball

Gaze played for the Melbourne Tigers for over 20 years, and topped the league (MBL) for points scoring in 14 of those. He also held the record for most points scored in Olympic competition. He played a few games in the American NBA, with Washington and San Antonio. I am just trying to imagine him doing synchronised swimming, but it is just not working- he is 2 metres (6'7" tall!).

His father, Lindsay, was also a champion basketballer, attending three Olympics, and coaching his son's Tigers for more than 35 years. He retired on the same day as Andrew.
4. Amanda Lee Rogers was born in Horsham, western Victoria, in 1973. She changed her name in her teens- her new Christian name came from a character in 'The Merchant of Venice'. Her breakthrough acting role was in 'Ally McBeal' , but it was her marriage in 2008 that created headlines. Who did she marry?

Answer: Ellen DeGeneres

Amanda Lee Rogers is better known as Portia de Rossi, and she married Ellen DeGeneres in Beverly Hills.
5. Steve Irwin was a larger-than-life character and a champion for animals everywhere, earning his nickname of 'The Wildlife Warrior'. He died doing what he loved, interacting with animals. He operated the Australia Zoo in Queensland, and even had time to film a television show. What was the name of the show, that ran from 1997 to 2004?

Answer: The Crocodile Hunter

Steve was a bit of a larrikin, and very loud, but he was also passionate about animals. He married Terri, another animal lover, and it was love at first sight.

Irwin died when he was stabbed in the chest by the tail of a stingray, whilst filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef, just off the coast of Queensland, Australia, in 2006.
6. Michael Balzary is known as one of the best bass guitarists in the world. He was born in Melbourne but moved to New York as a young child. He formed a band called Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, which eventually morphed into the Red Hot Chili Peppers. What was Balzary's nickname, and stagename?

Answer: Flea

'Freaky Styley' was the title of their second album, released in 1985. Puck was not known as a guitarist- he is a character in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', and Sting is an English musician, and lead singer for The Police.
7. Over the years, this woman has really polarised opinion in Australia and the UK. She attended university in Melbourne, Sydney and Cambridge. She has edited satirical underground magazines, and would probably admit to being a Marxist. However, she is probably best known for her literary works, chiefly on the topic of feminism. Her name is Germaine Greer, but what was her 1970 book?

Answer: The Female Eunuch

She has expressed outspoken views on topics ranging from the death of Steve Irwin to the writings of Tolkien and the shape of women's bras.

'A Room of One's Own' was written by Virginia Woolf in 1929. 'The Book of the City of Ladies' was written way back in 1405 by Italian/French Christine de Pizan. 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' is a work of philosophy by Robert M. Pirsig, and has nothing to do with Japanese religion, fixing motorbikes or women's lib.
8. This Melbourne-born man became one of the richest in the world, and made his fortune from media. He inherited the business from his father early in life, and bought newspapers all over Australia and New Zealand. He then went to England and bought the 'News of the World', 'The Sun' and 'The Times', amongst others. He also started Sky Television in the UK. His next target was the USA, where his shopping list included Twentieth Century Fox, HarperCollins and 'The Wall Street Journal'. His name is Rupert Murdoch, but what is the company that he heads?

Answer: News Limited

News Limited also has interests in Asian media outlets. He got a major rap over the knuckles over the phone-hacking scandal in the UK in 2011, where celebrities and ever royalty had their private conversations recorded.

Australian Consolidated Press and Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) were both companies controlled by Kerry Packer, a major competitor to the Murdoch empire. The Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) is the government-owned broadcaster.
9. In cricket, there are two main types of bowler- fast and spin. Shane Warne was one of Australia's best ever spinners and was the holder of the record for the most wickets taken, but was surpassed. With which other spin bowler did he have a long-lasting battle with to retain that record?

Answer: Muttiah Muralitharan from Sri Lanka

Muralitharan is the only spinner on the list- the other three bowlers were pace bowlers, considerably quicker than Warnie. Who was the better bowler? Both had incredible statistics and were the two highest wicket-takers in the world when Muralitharan retired in 2010 with 800, while Warne retired in 2007 with 708 scalps.

Both had their share of controversy. Muralitharan constantly had his bowling action called as illegal, and Warne was flamboyant and a bit of a playboy. He was linked to English actress Elizabeth Hurley for a few years, was banned for using a banned diuretic drug, got in trouble for some naughty text messages, and various other shenanigans.

She was born in Melbourne in 1941, into a showbiz family. She moved to America in her mid-20s struggled until 1972, when 'I Am Woman' hit the charts- it even won a Grammy. Oh, and 'Message to Michael' was a big hit for Dionne Warwick in 1966.
