Answer: An escape route for alllied soldiers from Brussels to the Pyrenees.

Dede set up an escape route through occupied Europe which ran from Brussels to the Pyrenees. After the second world war she was awarded the George Cross by King George VI of the United Kingdom. She went on to the work of caring for lepers in a leper colony.

Answer: Ukraine

Golda Meir was born in 1898 in Kiev. Her family moved to Wisconsin USA where Golda became active in Zionist politics. She served in many Israeli government posts including Minister of Labour, and eventually became Prime Minister. She was the third woman worldwide to be a prime minister.
3. What was the name of the British female politician who was nicknamed 'The Iron Lady'?

Answer: Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was the first female Prime Minister of Britain. She was also the longest serving British Prime Minister in 20th century. She had another nick-name, 'Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher', because she abolished free milk for children in schools when she was Education Secretary.

Answer: Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was a suffragist and clocked up many firsts for women.
She was the co-founder of the first hospital staffed by women, the first female dean of a British medical school, the first woman doctor in France, the first woman to be elected to a school board, and the first woman to become a mayor in Britain when she was elected by the town of Aldeburgh.
5. What was the name of the young woman who stabbed Jean-Paul Marat, the Jacobin leader during the French revolution, in his bath?

Answer: Charlotte Corday

Charlotte Corday was upset by the violent course that the revolution had taken and she saw Marat as largely responsible for this. She supported the Girondins and Marat had purged the Girondins Charlotte stabbed him in his bath. Jacques-Louis David famously painted a picture of Marat after he had been stabbed. Charlotte Corday was executed by guillotine on 23rd July 1793.

Emmeline Pankhurst was a strong advocate for women's suffrage. She founded the Women's Social and Political Union, which had the slogan 'Deeds not Words' and her group became notorious for setting fire to buildings, assaulting police officers and smashing windows.

Many of her supporters, including herself and her daughters Christabel and Sylvia, served prison sentences and were subjected to force feeding and other inhumane treatment. In 1918 votes were awarded to women over 30 who had property, and this was the start towards full suffrage.

Answer: Corazon Aquino

Corazon Aquino served as eleventh president of the Philippines, and was the first woman to hold that position. She was a prominent figure in the 'People's Power Revolution' of 1986, which overthrew President Ferdinand Marcos who had been the dictator there for 21 years.

Answer: A schoolgirl who was shot in the head by the Taliban

Malala is from Pakistan. When she was 15 years old she was shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating the rights of girls to receive education. At the age of eleven she started blogging for the BBC about what it is like to live under Taliban rule. Malala won the 'Nobel Peace Prize' in 2014 when she was still only seventeen years old.
9. What was the name of the Queen of the Iceni tribe who fought the Romans in ancient Britain?

Answer: Boudicca

Boudicca's husband Prasutagus ruled the Iceni as an independent ruler but when he died, his will leaving his kingdom jointly to his daughters and the Roman Emperor was ignored. The Romans moved in and took over. Boudicca was flogged and her daughters were raped. Boudicca led a revolt against the Romans and 7,000-8,000 people (both British and Roman) were killed. Emperor Nero considered withdrawing all Roman troops from Britain, but at the Battle of Watling Street Boudicca and her followers were defeated and the Romans resumed power.
10. What was the name of the first woman in space?

Answer: Valentina Tereshkova

Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union was the first woman launched into space, on June 16th 1963. She was 26 years old at the time. She was selected from over 400 applicants and after the flight she studied and became of doctor of engineering. When she retired from the Soviet Air force she was active in politics, and was an international representative for the Soviet Union.
