Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these scientists was NOT helpful in discovering the double-helix structure of DNA?

Answer: Johnson

Although James Watson and Francis Crick were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the double-helix structure of DNA, they actually "borrowed" information from Rosalind Franklin, who had also been studying the structure of DNA. Franklin, however, died from exposure to too much radiation before she could be awarded the Nobel Prize with Watson and Crick.
2. Which famous philosopher pioneered the classification of plants and animals?

Answer: Aristotle

Although not primarily a mathematician, Aristotle also made contributions by systematising deductive logic.
3. Who discovered the circulatory system?

Answer: Harvey

Harvey actually dug up corpses from the ground to study the circulatory system. How disgusting!
4. Who started the first blood bank?

Answer: Charles Drew

Charles Drew was the first person to develop a method for typing and storing blood.
5. Here's an easy one. Who went down in history as the founder of the theory of natural selection?

Answer: Darwin

Around the same time that Charles Darwin came up with the theory of natural selection, a man named Alfred Wallace came up with a very similar theory, but he received little to no credit for it.
6. Who studied the behavior of chimps in the wild?

Answer: Jane Goodall

Goodall lived in the wild with the chimpanzees, studying them, for years. She discovered that they, like humans, murder each other for reasons other than starvation.
7. Who disproved spontaneous generation at the macroscopic level?

Answer: Redi

Redi disproved this by having two pieces of rotting meat put into containers, one of which was completely airtight. The other one, after some time, ended up with maggots, and bugs, while the airtight one did not. Therefore, he proved that the meat was not generating bugs, just attracting them.
8. Who was accredited with creating the term 'cell', the smallest structural unit of an organism?

Answer: Hooke

Hooke came up with the name "cell" after viewing a piece of cork under a microscope, and seeing the cell-like chambers in it.
9. Who generated amino acids from inorganic material?

Answer: Miller and Urey

After spontaneous generation was disproved, people were wondering how the first organisms on Earth were created. Miller and Urey worked in their laboratory to simulate what the earth was like millions of years ago. By combining certain conditions and elements, they produced amino acids. No one has been able to produce life from inorganic matter yet, but it's only a matter of time.
10. Which of these scientists studied evolution prior to Darwin, but is much less well-known in modern times?

Answer: Lamarck

Lamarck believed that you could pass on aquired characteristics, but since, he has been disproven many times.
