Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Neither Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. nor his father, Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. (who was also known by the nickname of "Daddy King") were really named "Martin". They each changed their first names to "Martin" because it sounded more eloquent than the first name they were given. What was the real first name of both men?

Answer: Michael

King used the name "Michael" throughout his youth and did not change it until he was getting ready to be assigned as a minister to his first church, in Montgomery, Alabama. But, the name "Michael" was on the birth certificates of both men and neither ever legally changed their names to "Martin".
2. While studying for his doctorate in theology at Boston University, Martin Luther King met a beautiful young woman who was studying for an advanced degree at the New England Conservatory of Music. Coretta Scott had already gotten a bachelor's degree in music at Antioch College in Ohio. Before becoming King's wife in 1953, Coretta Scott received her advanced degree in both voice and in playing a musical instrument. What instrument?

3. The Kings had four children. Which of them followed in their father's footsteps and became a minister?

Answer: Bernice

Bernice, the youngest of the King children, was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1990 (receiving a law degree the same day). Her first sermon was delivered at the church that is synonymous with the King name: Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church. She served as an assistant minister there for three years before moving on to another church in Atlanta.

She returned, however, to preach the sermon at the funeral of her mother, Coretta Scott King.
4. The first church where Martin Luther King was a minister was in Montgomery, Alabama. Which of his children is named after that church?

Answer: Dexter

The Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery became a hotbed of what the segregationist white leadership of the city considered to be outsiders trying to ruin their way of life. It was from here that the then 26-year-old Dr. King, along with his closest friend, Rev. Ralph Abernathy, helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott that lasted a year, until the white establishment capitulated. King sometimes said he wished that he could have just been a minister helping people at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, but that God had another plan for him.
5. Although their fathers never met and both men were civil rights leaders who were assassinated, two of their children became very close. Attallah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, and one of Martin Luther King's children both went into acting and frequently collaborated on stage. Which of King's children chose to go into acting?

Answer: Yolanda

Yolanda King frequently appeared on stage with Attallah Shabazz in productions they created from their joint histories as the children of civil rights leaders who had been assassinated. Yolanda also appeared in films, sometimes playing the parts of real people.

In the miniseries "King" she played Rosa Parks, who wouldn't give up her seat on a bus to a white man, touching off the Montgomery bus boycott. In "Ghosts of Mississippi" she played the elder daughter of Medgar Evers, the NAACP leader in Mississippi who was gunned down in his driveway in June 1963.
6. Martin Luther King was not the only member of his immediate family to be assassinated. On June 30, 1974, another member of his family was shot dead inside Ebenezer Baptist Church during a service. Which member of King's family was murdered?

Answer: Alberta King, his mother

Alberta King, who was 70 years old, was sitting at the church organ when a 23-year-old man from Ohio took aim at her and fired, killing her instantly. His reason for killing her, according to numerous contemporary newspaper and magazine accounts: he thought all Christians were his enemies.
7. Coretta Scott King died on January 30, 2006 in a clinic in Mexico where she was being treated for ovarian cancer. She had told people the one regret she had was not having any grandchildren. Two-and-a-half-years later, on May 25, 2008 one of her children finally had a baby daughter, who was the only grandchild of Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King. Which of the King children is the parent of this little girl?

Answer: Martin III

Martin III and his wife Arndrea Waters King named their baby daughter Yolanda Renee King, after his oldest sister who had unexpectedly died a year earlier. Martin III was the only one of his siblings to marry and have a child, as of November 2010. He told various reporters, when asked, that he and his wife had thought about naming their daughter after his mother, Coretta.

But they decided not to because they were concerned about the expectations that might greet a little girl named after one of the most influential women of the 20th century.
8. On May 15, 2007 one of the Kings' children died very unexpectedly in California, less than a year-and-a-half after mother Coretta. Which one of the Kings' children died at a young age.

Answer: Yolanda

Yolanda King was only 51 years old when she died in the doorway of her brother Dexter's home in Santa Monica, California. She collapsed and died of what was later determined to be congestive heart failure. A little over a year later her brother Martin III and his wife would choose to name their daughter after his beloved older sister.
9. For the last few years of his life, King's assassin James Earl Ray starred in a particularly grotesque spectacle when he managed to convince Dexter King that he had not murdered his father. Ray claimed--as he always had--that mysterious forces had been behind the assassination, framing him as the killer. Police had investigated Ray's claims and found them to be without merit. But Ray told Dexter King that the only way he could reveal what he knew was through a trial. (Ray had chosen to plead guilty without a trial in 1968.)Not only Dexter King, but other members of the King family backed Ray's plea for a trial. What was wrong with Ray's claim that he could only tell the truth under oath at a trial?

Answer: Ray could simply have told the complete story of what he claimed was his innocence to anyone. He didn't need a trial to do that.

The spectacle of watching Dexter King pleading for a new trial so Ray could finally tell the truth must have given Ray a tremendous amount of pleasure. There is, of course, nothing within the United States that would prevent any inmate from telling their story at any time to anyone willing to listen. No trial was needed. But here James Earl Ray had met with and convinced one of King's children that he hadn't killed his father when all of the physical evidence pointed directly at Ray as the sole killer.
I made up all of the other answers that were incorrect.
