Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York Quiz

I started loving the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485) after I read Shakespeare's historical plays, "Henry VI" (Parts I-III) and "Richard III". The history behind it is really awesome. Have fun!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What title did Richard Plantagenet's father have? Also named Richard Plantagenet, he was executed under Henry V for trying to replace him with Edmund Mortimer, Earl of March.

Answer: Earl of Cambridge

Edmund was the next in line to the throne of England when Richard II was overthrown by Henry IV. Although extremely young, he was considered a threat and put in prison, where he ended up dying, even though he survived both Henry IV and his son, Henry V. Edmund's sister, Anne, was married to the Earl of Cambridge.
2. The Duke of York had four sons by his wife, Cecily Neville - although some sources claim that the oldest one was the result of an affair that Cecily had. How many of these sons were to become kings of England?

Answer: Two

Richard himself never captured the English throne, but his oldest and youngest sons were to reign as Edward IV and Richard III respectively.
3. Cecily Neville - whether she cheated on her husband or not - was a powerful tool in the House of York's fight against the Lancastrians, through her powerful family connections. One of her family members became known as the "Kingmaker" to posterity. Who was he?

Answer: The Earl of Warwick

Warwick initially helped Richard and his son, who later became Edward IV, against Henry VI. After Richard's death, he helped Edward become king, but soon had a fall-out with him, and helped Henry regain the throne. He was finally killed while unsuccessfully fighting on the Lancastrian side.
4. What colour was the rose that represented the House of York?

Answer: White

There's a made-up scene in Shakespeare's "Henry VI part I", which described how the two rival factions picked their symbols - York a white rose, and Lancaster a red one. It's one of my all-time favourite Shakespeare scenes.
5. York won this famous battle in 1455.

Answer: St. Albans

Unfortunately for Richard, this battle ultimately failed to help him. Hence: "Richard of York gained battles in vain," a great way to remember the colours of the rainbow in order (red-orange-yellow-green-blue-indigo-violet).
6. Both Richard, Duke of York, and his son, Edmund, Earl of Rutland, were killed in this battle.

Answer: Wakefield

York was in Sandal Castle at the time, but he went out to meet Queen Margaret's forces, in order to avoid having to fight a siege. His forces were heavily outnumbered, and many prominent Yorkists died in this battle, which was clearly won by the Lancastrian forces.
7. According to tradition, as well as several other sources, and also Shakespeare's plays, what happened to York's head after he was killed?

Answer: It was crowned with a paper crown and put on the walls of York.

Again, this scene is one of the most moving ones of Shakespeare's plays - in "Henry VI, part III", although it is over-dramatized, as usual.
8. When did the Duke of York die?

Answer: 1460

He died on December 30, 1460, at Wakefield.
9. Where is Richard buried?

Answer: Fotheringhay

Richard and his son Edmund had been buried in a plain tomb in Pontefract after the battle of Wakefield. With great pomp, they were reburied at Fotheringhay in 1476, during Edward IV's reign.
10. Richard was ultimately made a saint by the Anglican Church.

Answer: False

Clearly not!
He was Catholic, like most Englishmen at that time, and isn't marked down anywhere for his religious views.
