Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what date were the Kray twins born?

Answer: 24th October 1933

They were born in Stene street, Hoxton, London. Later the family moved to their permanent residence at 178 Vallance Road, Bethnal Green about two miles (three km's) away.
2. In 1952 the Krays were drafted to serve in which army regiment?

Answer: Royal Fusiliers

The Royal Fusiliers were based at the Tower of London, just a short bus ride away from Bethnal Green. The Krays army career was shortlived and after serving time in a military prison, both were dishonourably discharged.
3. On leaving the army the Krays bought a snooker hall in East London. What was the name of the hall?

Answer: The Regal

The hall was bought for the princely sum of five pounds.
4. Ronnie Kray was diagnosed as insane in 1958. To which mental hospital was he sent to?

Answer: Long Grove

Ronnie didn't stay for long as he and his brother hatched an elaborate escape plan. Reggie visited his brother and wore identical clothes (they were identical twins too) and when a member of staff went to fetch some tea they simply swapped places and Ronnie walked out as 'Reggie.'
5. Reggie Kray had met a girl who would eventually end up as his wife. What was her name?

Answer: Frances Shea

Frances was never cut out for the 'gangster wife' role and tried suicide on several occasions eventually succeeding by taking an overdose of pills in June 1967.
6. In 1961 the Krays moved into London's affluent society by buying the club 'Esmerelda's Barn' in Knightsbridge. To protect the image of the club they had a peer of the realm on the board. What was his name?

Answer: Lord Effingham

'Esmerelda's Barn' was finished within two years. East end gangsterism mixed poorly with high society and the nobility soon moved on. The financial side of the club had been poorly run due to Ronnie Kray's influence. Club members were allowed to run up huge debts in the casino which they never had a hope of paying back.
7. In March 1966, Ronnie Kray walked into the Blind Beggar public house and shot George Cornell dead. The song playing on the jukebox at the time was 'You've lost that loving feeling' by the Righteous Brothers.

Answer: False

It was the Walker Brothers with the aptly titled 'The sun ain't gonna shine anymore.' This was certainly true in Cornell's case.
8. In October 1967, Jack 'the Hat' McVitie became the next victim to meet his maker, this time by courtesy of Reggie Kray. How was McVitie killed?

Answer: stabbed to death

Originally Reggie Kray intended to shoot him but the gun jammed and Ronnie passed a kitchen knife over to Reggie who preceded to stab McVitie repeatedly in the face and neck.
9. On May 8th 1968, the Krays were arrested by the police early that morning at their parents apartment. What was the name of the apartment block?

Answer: Braithwate House

The mother and father of the Kray twins, Violet and Charlie Snr, had been moved out of Vallance road three months previously due to the house being demolished under the slum clearance programme of the time.
10. In March 1969, the Krays were sentenced to a minimum recommendation of thirty years each. Which police chief had been instrumental in their downfall?

Answer: Leonard Reed

Leonard 'Nipper' Read finally got his long awaited result, thus changing the face of British criminality for all time.
