Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Young and beautiful, this couple earned themselves a nickname with the press. What was it?

Answer: the 'Ken and Barbie' killers

She was only 17 and he was 23 when they met. By the time they were married, less than 4 years later (June 29, 1991), they had already killed 2 young girls and raped many others.
2. The first person they killed was Karla's youngest sister, Tammy Lyn Homolka.

Answer: True

Paul wanted to have sex with Karla's younger sister so, after some initial resistance, Karla agreed to help him rape Tammy, as a Christmas gift. Karla obtained the drugs (from the veterinary clinic where she worked) that they used to sedate her sister and even participated in the rape while her sister was unconscious.

However they were unskilled in the use of the drug (halothane) and Tammy Lyn choked on her own vomit and died.
3. Paul Bernardo was also found to be the Scarborough Rapist, a serial rapist in the area of Toronto that he lived before moving to St. Catharines with Karla.

Answer: True

Paul so closely resembled a composite drawing of the rapist that quite a few people called in their suspicions to the police. He was interviewed and, on request, left blood, saliva and hair samples for comparitive typing. Unfortunately it wasn't until they already knew about his involvement in two murders that the results positively identified him as the Scarborough Rapist.
4. Karla became furious when Paul told her about being a rapist, and threatened to leave him if he didn't stop.

Answer: False

If anything, Karla seemed to encourage Paul in this, believing that he deserved to have everything he wanted. In fact a few of the rapes occurred in their home, where Karla not only helped Paul with videotaping and drugging the girls, but also participated in the rapes.
5. What is significant about the date June 29, 1991?

Answer: both of these

Paul abducted 14 year old Leslie Mahaffy at knifepoint, and brought her home blindfolded. She suffered numerous indignities at both of their hands only to be strangled on Father's Day, two weeks before their wedding. Karla and Paul entertained Karla's parents for Father's Day dinner while Leslie's body lay in the basement.

Then Paul cut up Leslie's body with a chainsaw, encased the body parts in cement, and together he and Karla dumped them into Lake Gibson. Fortunately they were discovered when water levels were low.
6. Where was the body of their next victim, Kristen French, found?

Answer: in a ditch, only a few hundred yards from where Leslie Mahaffy was buried

There were 10 months and many rapes between Leslie's murder and when they brought Kristen home. This time Karla assisted in Kristen's capture, putting her at ease by asking for directions. Paul and Karla assumed, rightly, that a teenaged girl would be less suspicious of a couple than she would be of a solitary man. Kristen was abducted on the Thursday before Easter weekend in 1992, and killed before Easter dinner at Karla's parent's house on Sunday afternoon.

Initially police did not link the two cases because of the differences in the ways the bodies were disposed.
7. Paul believed that he was going to be rich and famous. How was he going to accomplish this?

Answer: He was planning on becoming a rap star.

Paul was trained as an accountant but had quit his job at Price Waterhouse. He found that he made more money smuggling cigarettes and alcohol over from the States. This also left him more time to work on his rap album, under the name of Young Hype.
8. Paul was finally arrested for the murders of Kristen and Leslie because Karla talked about what he'd done, in return for a shorter sentence for herself.

Answer: True

Paul's physical abuse of Karla had escalated to the point where he beat her so badly with a flashlight that she required three days of hospitalization. However, once free of Paul, she did not tell anyone of what they'd done until she became afraid that the police already knew everything.
9. Karla's deal gave her complete immunity for her role in the murders of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French.

Answer: False

Although Karla wanted complete immunity, she was sentenced to 10 years for her involvement in the killings. An additional two years was added to her sentence when the prosecutors became aware of her role in the death of her sister. This deal angered many people, especially since the deal also demanded full disclosure on Karla's part, with the possibility of more severe sanctions if further crimes came to light.

When the video tapes that had been made eventually surfaced, they showed that Karla had not been completely honest, which left the door open for further charges, but none were laid. Karla was unconditionally released in 2005.
10. What event(s) in his childhood may have helped shape Paul's personality?

Answer: all of these

When he was 16 years old his mother told him that he was the result of an affair, threw a picture of his real father at him, and called him her bastard child from then on in. So it was really his stepfather (Ken Bernardo) who molested Paul's sister, and was caught peeking in windows. Paul's sister eventually brought charges against her father when she found that he was also abusing her daughter. Ken and Paul's arrests were only a few days apart.
11. Paul and Karla applied to have their last name legally changed to Teale.

Answer: True

Paul felt no connection to the name Bernardo since Ken Bernardo was not his real father. They chose the name Teale after the serial killer Martin Thiel in the movie 'Criminal Law'. Paul chose Jason for his new middle name, from the character in the 'Friday the 13th' movies. Their request for change was approved on Feb. 12, 1993, five days before he was arrested.
12. Paul's lawyer had the incriminating tapes in his possession for 15 months before turning them over.

Answer: True

The police spent three months searching Paul and Karla's house and did not find the tapes. Paul's lawyer (Ken Murray) found them only because Paul told him where they were hidden (behind a light in a drop ceiling of the upstairs bathroom). The tapes provided irrefutable evidence as to Karla's involvement with the murders, and Ken had them in his possession for a good week before Karla's deal was finalized. If he had turned them in sooner, Karla would not have gotten the deal that she did.
13. Paul Bernardo admitted to being a rapist, but claimed that Karla was the one who had actually killed Leslie and Kristen.

Answer: True

With the tapes as evidence, he could hardly deny his involvement in the rapes. But the actual murders were not taped, and he remained resolute that Karla was the one who'd actually done the killings. In fact he maintained that he wasn't even home when they occurred.

When he heard of the lighter sentence that she received, he protested that she was sicker than he was. He was convicted of all charges against him, and sentenced to life in jail with no parole for 25 years.
14. Paul was later convicted of the murder of two other young girls, Lynda Shaw and Cindy Halliday, which occurred in the same part of the province in the same general time frame.

Answer: False

Even though Paul was considered as a suspect, there was no evidence linking him to either of these murders. Karla claimed no knowledge of Paul's involvement, and felt very strongly that the victims were not 'Paul's type'. Although Lynda was abducted in a way that was very similar to a plan that Paul had once outlined to Karla.
15. Karla's defense centered largely on being a battered wife who lived in terror of her husband.

Answer: True

Unfortunately this argument lost a lot of its credibility when the tapes surfaced and the full extent of her involvement came to light. Stephen Williams, author of 'Invisible Darkness', sees Karla as being a hybristophiliac, which is; 'a woman who is sexually turned on only by a partner with a history of rape and pillage'.

He cites Bonnie, from Bonnie & Clyde fame, as being a classic example of this condition. He also reminds us that,'in Barbie's world everything is an accessory - including Ken'.
