Michel Platini was one of the most gifted attacking midfielders that France has ever produced, with an ability to play skillful football as well as read the game technically. He used this latter attribute to good effect when he retired from playing and was named national coach.

The team went on a 19-game unbeaten streak under him, but then were eliminated in the first round of Euro '92 and he stood aside. In 2015, he received an eight year ban from all football activity after being found guilty of ethics violations while president of UEFA.
