Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a co-founder of United Artists this actress was the first woman to own a major Hollywood movie studio. Which Mary accomplished this?

Answer: Mary Pickford

Though born in Canada, Mary Pickford (1892 - 1979) was known as "America's Sweetheart" during her career as a famous (if not the most famous) silent screen star. United Artists was formed in 1919 by Pickford, her future husband Douglas Fairbanks, actor Charlie Chaplin and director D.W. Griffith.

She was an astute businesswoman: when American women couldn't even vote, Ms. Pickford produced and wrote her own films and was the first actress to be paid a cut of the box-office.
2. Which Mary was a famous Impressionist painter?

Answer: Cassatt

Mary Cassatt (1844 - 1926) was the daughter of a wealthy Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania businessman. Ms. Cassatt persuaded her friend Louisine Havermeyer to purchase works by several of her contemporaries, particularly Degas and Monet. Mrs. Hevermeyer and her children donated almost 2000 paintings to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, forming the backbone of one of the world's largest collections of Impressionist art.
3. Which Mary is the English fashion designer and cosmetics entrepreneur who takes credit for inventing the mini-skirt and hot pants?

Answer: Mary Quant

Mary Quant (b. Kent, England 1934) was known as the "High Priestess of 1960s Fashion" and was named an OBE (The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 1966 for her pioneering work in couture design. Mary McFadden, Claire McArdle and Emilio Pucci were also noted designers.
4. Do you know the Seattle-born Mary who was the author of "The Group" (1963) and the sister of actor Kevin (same last name)?

Answer: McCarthy

Mary McCarthy (1912 - 1989) wrote "The Group" based on her experiences at Vassar College in the 1930s. It is said she had a famous feud with fellow author Lillian Hellman in which Ms. McCarthy supposedly uttered that "every word she (Hellman) writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the'." Her brother Kevin McCarthy (b. 1914) starred in the cult horror film "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and in "Death of a Salesman."
5. Ricky Nelson had a hit song about this girl that reached #9 on the Billboard Charts in 1962. Who did Ozzie and Harriet's boy sing "Hello" to?

Answer: Mary Lou

"Hello, Mary Lou", which was the flip side of another hit, "Travelin' Man", was Rick Nelson's biggest selling song. For the "Ozzie and Harriet" television show, Ozzie overlaid Rick's singing "Travelin' Man" with some location footage thus creating what could have been the first ever rock video.
6. Heading into the 1984 Olympics this Mary was the only American runner, male or female, to hold every American track record from 800 to 10,000-meters concurrently. Do you know her?

Answer: Decker

Mary Decker was the heavy favorite to win the gold medal in the 3,000 meter event at the 1984 Summer Olympics. She and South African Zola Budd collided during the race and Decker fell off the track, severely injuring her hip. Though she participated in a total of four Olympic games and went on to set more world running records, Mary Decker never tasted Olympic victory.
7. Although her parents named her Mary Cathleen Collins this woman, famous for (among other things) her hair, is better known by the name given to her by her late actor husband John. Which former Mary is she?

Answer: Bo Derek

Bo Derek leaped to instant celebrity in the 1979 movie "10" in which she famously wore her hair in corn rows. She married John Derek in 1976 when she was 19 and he was 49. Their marriage lasted almost 22 years, until his death in 1998. John Derek was also married to two other beautiful blondes - Ursula Andress and Linda Evans.
8. What's the 411 on this Mary? She is an American R&B/soul singer and actress who won three Grammy Awards in 2007 for "The Breakthrough." Can you spot her?

Answer: Mary J. Blige

"What's the 411" was Mary J. Blige's debut album in 1992. She made her acting debut on "The Jamie Foxx Show" in 1998 and has also appeared off-Broadway.
9. Who was a last-minute replacement in the role of Michael Corleone's daughter, Mary Corleone, in "The Godfather Part III"?

Answer: Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola was chosen by her father, director Francis Ford Coppola, to replace Winona Ryder when Ms. Ryder dropped out due to (allegedly) the stress of making several back-to-back films. Ms. Coppola won an Academy Award for screenwriting in 2003 and was the first American woman to receive an Oscar nomination in the directing category.

She is also a member of one of only two families with three generations of Oscar recipients: dad Francis is a multiple winner and grandfather Carmine Coppola won for composing the score of "The Godfather Part II". (Walter, John and Angelica Huston are the other three-generation Oscar family.)
10. Between 1900 and 1907 a New York cook named Mary Mallon became famous for spreading an often deadly communicable disease. What is the name we know her as today?

Mary Mallon was quarantined for life after she was identified as the typhoid carrier. She lived until 1938.
11. Mary Anna Randolph Custis followed in the footsteps of her great-grandmother Martha Washington by marrying a famous American general. Who was her husband?

Answer: Robert E. Lee

Mary Anna Custis Lee inherited her family's home, Arlington House, also called the Custis-Lee Mansion. During the American Civil War the Union Army seized the mansion for use as a cemetery. The burial ground is now the Arlington National Cemetery, a military burial ground for notable American veterans and government officials, including President Lincoln's son Robert, civil rights leader Medgar Evers, boxing champ Joe Louis and "Maltese Falcon" author Dashiel Hammet.
12. From 1992 to 1995 country music artist Mary Chapin Carpenter held which Grammy Award distinction?

13. In the 2008 film "The Other Boleyn Girl" which actress portrayed Mary Boleyn, mistress of Henry VIII and younger sister of the famous Anne?

Answer: Scarlett Johansson

Her best selling books include "Ladies of Liberty", "We Are Our Mother's Daughters" and "Founding Mothers." She married college professor Steven Roberts in 1962.

Interesting Cokie Roberts trivia: Her father was the former US House Majority Leader Hale Boggs of Louisiana. Her mother, "Lindy" (Marie Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs), was named to fill Mr. Boggs' Congressional seat when he was presumed killed in a plane crash in 1972. Mrs. Boggs served in the U.S. Congress until 1991.
15. Which pop group had a top 10 hit song in 1966 with "Along Comes Mary"?

Answer: The Association

Like "Puff the Magic Dragon", the song "Along Comes Mary" is an unsubstantiated rumor alluding to marijuana. The Association had several more hits including "Windy" and "Cherish" which hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Charts in 1966.
