Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the titles of Old Testament books below, which two are part of the Pentateuch?

Answer: Genesis and Exodus

Genesis and Exodus are both part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Hebrew Bible as well as the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. According to Meriam-Webster, Pentateuch means simply "five books". The first five books, or the Pentateuch are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Tradition holds the books were written by Moses but some modern day scholars strongly dispute this belief.
2. Out of the titles of Old Testament books below, which two are NOT part of the Minor Prophet section?

Answer: 1 Kings and 2 Kings

1 Kings and 2 Kings are not part of the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament. All the other titles given -- Zechariah and Zephaniah, Haggai and Malachi, Micah and Nahum -- are part of the Minor Prophet section. The twelve books of the Minor Prophet section are found at the end of the Old Testament. In the Hebrew Bible, the Minor Prophet section is known as the Twelve Prophets.
3. Out of the titles below, which two are books in the Old Testament named after women?

Answer: Ruth and Esther

Ruth and Esther are two books in the Old Testament named after women. Ruth was a Gentile woman who married Mahlon, the son of Elimelek and Naomi. After Mahlon died, Ruth married Boaz and their marriage resulted in the birth of a boy, Obed. Obed would become the grandfather of David.

Meanwhile, Esther was a young Jewish woman who ended up becoming queen of Persia. While serving as queen, she worked with her cousin Mordecai, to thwart a plan by Haman to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire that stretched from India in the east to Ethiopia in the west.
4. Out of the names below, which two were brothers of Miriam?

Answer: Moses and Aaron

Moses and Aaron were both brothers of Miriam. Moses, with the assistance of Aaron and Miriam, led the Israelites on a forty-year-long journey out of Egypt to Canaan, known as the Promised Land.

According to Exodus 6:20, Amram and Jochebed were the parents of Moses, Aaron and Miriam. The same verse states Jochebed was the sister of Amram's father.
5. Out of the names below, which two were spies who returned from Canaan with a good report for Moses?

Answer: Joshua and Caleb

Out of twelve spies commissioned by Moses to go into Canaan only two of them, Joshua and Caleb, returned with a positive report. The ten other spies were not impressed with the territory they saw and they were terrified of the inhabitants, saying the Israelites would have no chance of ousting them to occupy the land. The ten spies said the inhabitants were so tall they made the Israelites appear as grasshoppers.

Joshua and Caleb, however, saw things differently as they were confident God would lead the Israelites to miraculous military victories over their adversaries.

According to Numbers 13:4-14, one man was selected by Moses from each of the twelve tribes to spy out the land of Canaan.
6. Out of the names below, which two were wives of David?

Answer: Haggith and Maacah

Haggith and Maacah were both wives of David, as per 2 Samuel 3:2-5. According to the passage, Haggith was the mother of Adonijah while Maacah was the mother of Absalom. The passage also states Maacah was the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur. However, no details are given about Haggith's parents.

It's interesting to note Adonijah and Absalom both attempted to replace David as king.
7. Out of the names below, which two were wives of Elkanah?

Answer: Peninnah and Hannah

Elkanah had two wives, Peninnah and Hannah. According to 1 Samuel 1, Peniniah was the mother of an unstated number of children while Hannah was unable to conceive. Scripture states Hannah was depressed about her condition and Peniniah made things worse by "provoking her severely to make her miserable."

Scripture goes on to tell of Hannah being miraculously able to conceive and giving birth to Samuel, a noted judge of Israel.
8. Out of the list of names below, which two served time in jail?

Answer: Joseph, from the Old Testament, and Paul

Joseph, the son of Jacob and Rachel, and Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, were both jailed. Joseph was jailed after Potiphar's wife falsely accused him of attempted rape while Paul was incarcerated for preaching the Gospel message.

There is no documentation in Scripture pertaining to Jonathan, Simeon, Moses, Zecharias, Miriam and Mary Magdalene being put behind bars.
9. Out of the choices below, which one represents the two MAJOR divisions in the Christian Bible?

Answer: Old Testament and New Testament

Anyway you slice it, the two major divisions in the Christian Bible are the Old Testament and the New Testament.

In the Protestant Bible, there are thirty-nine books in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New Testament for a total of sixty-six books. Meanwhile, the Catholic Bible contains forty-six books in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New Testament for a total of seventy-three books.
10. Out of the titles of New Testament books below, which two were NOT written by Paul?

Answer: Hebrews and Revelation

Hebrews and Revelation are two titles of New Testament books not written by Paul. Tradition holds Revelation was written by John, a member of the original Twelve Disciples. However, no one knows for certain who wrote Hebrews.

Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles is credited with writing thirteen books, including 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, 1 Thessalonians and 2 Thessalonians.
