Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Exodus 1 (New International Version), what happened when the Egyptian slave masters oppressed the Israelites?

Answer: The more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread

See Exodus 1:11-14. The Egyptians' plan in making the Israelites work harder was to prevent them increasing in numbers and becoming a threat (vv8-10). The plan backfired, because it had the opposite effect.

They may have complained or praised God, but this is not mentioned. It is unlikely that slave labourers would be able to work to rule.

2. According to Exodus 6:20 (King James Version) what were the names of Moses' parents?

Answer: Amram and Jochebed

Jochebed was also Amram's aunt, as she was his father's sister. Aaron and Miriam were Moses' brother and sister. Moses also had a wife named Zipporah, a father-in-law named Jethro and a son named Gershom. It states in Exodus 4:25 that Zipporah circumcised her own son and then touched the foreskin on Moses' feet, saying they were now married by blood.

3. According to Exodus 7 and 8 (New American Standard Bible) there were Egyptian "magicians" and "wise men" who were able to produce their own versions of some of the LORD's miracles, but there was one that they couldn't recreate. This led them to admit to the Egyptian king that the plague was by "the finger of God". What plague was it?

Answer: Gnats

Chapters 7 and 8 of Exodus include Moses and Aaron going before the pharaoh by the LORD's command. God performed a lot of miracles through Aaron and Moses, but somehow, the Egyptian magicians were able to produce their own versions. First of all, their staffs turned into snakes like Aaron's staff did, although it is interesting that Aaron's serpent swallowed the other serpents. This suggests that God's snake was stronger than the Egyptian ones were. Still, when the LORD turned the Nile river into blood, the magicians did it as well. It was the same thing with the plague of frogs. When it came to the plague of gnats or insects, however, they realized that the Hebrews' God was more powerful than their witchcraft, because they couldn't mock His miracles anymore.

Exodus doesn't explicitly mention how the Egyptian sorcerers were able to mimic God's miracles of snakes, blood, and frogs, but given that they were using "secret arts"--occultism --which is always evil in the Bible, they most likely got their power from Satan. Come to think of it, it has been said that Satan usually does copy God--read Revelation, for example. Satan creates an unholy trinity, consisting of himself, the Beast, and the False Prophet.

4. Much of Exodus concerns the construction of the Tabernacle and also the specifications for the garments of the High Priest. He wore a turban, and attached to the front of it was a golden plate engraved with which words?

Answer: Holy to the LORD

Verse 36 of Exodus 28 reads, "You are to make a medallion of pure gold, and engrave on it 'Holy to the LORD,' like the engravings of a signet" (International Standard Version).

Aaron was the first High Priest.

5. According to the New International Version, in Exodus 15, what did Moses throw into the water at Marah, so that the Israelites could drink?

Answer: a piece of wood

See Exodus 15:22-27. The Israelites could not drink the water because it was bitter, so God showed Moses a piece of wood, which he threw into the water, making it fit to drink.

God promises the Israelites that as long as they listen to God obey His commandments, they will not suffer in the same way as the Egyptians, because God is their healer (v26).

6. When the Israelites were marching through the desert on the way to Mount Sinai, where they were to receive the Ten Commandments, they were attacked by the army of a certain people. Can you name them?

Answer: The Amalekites

In verse 8 of Exodus 17 we read "Then the Amalekites came and fought with the Israelis at Rephidim" (International Standard Version).

Of the incorrect answers, we read in Exodus 13:17 that God deliberately led the Israelites AWAY from the Philistines. In a later book of the Bible, Judges, we read (verses 16 - 18 of chapter 11) that the Israelites circumvented both Moab and Edom to avoid any conflict.

7. Both Moses and Aaron had sons with very similar names. To clarify, Moses had one son named Gershom, but he also had another son, who shared a name similar to that of a son of Aaron. What was the name of Gershom's brother (Exodus 18:4)?

Answer: Eliezer

Readers can find information about the sons of Moses, Gershom and Eliezer, in Exodus 18:1-4. Moses named his firstborn Gershom because Moses had been a stranger in a strange land, the land of Midian. He named the other Eliezer because the Hebrews' God, the God of his father, helped him. His wife and their mother was Zipporah.

As for Aaron, his wife was Elisheba and their sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. See Exodus 6:23. Not only do the names Eliezer and Eleazar look similar, but they also have almost identical meanings. Eliezer means "my God is help", while Eleazar means "my God has helped".

Aaron and Moses were brothers, so their sons were cousins.

8. The 20th chapter of the Book of Exodus contains a listing of the ten commandments. God spoke these commandments to Moses, on Mt. Sinai. What is the very first commandment?

Answer: You shall have no other gods before Me.

In the first commandment God is forbidding the worship of ANYTHING other than Him, actually acknowledging that He is a jealous God. This means that any thing, person or activity that a person puts before fellowship with God probably has become an idol, and that person is guilty of idol worship, breaking the first commandment.

9. The story of the golden calf, an idol built by Moses's brother Aaron at the demand of the Israelites, can be found in Exodus chapter 32. When Moses came down from Mt. Sinai, what was his reaction to the golden calf?

Answer: Moses ground it into powder, mixed it with the water and made the people drink it.

Moses had just received from God the two stone tablets with the ten commandments. In his anger, Moses threw the tablets down and destroyed them. In chapter 34 God commanded Moses to cut two new tablets and bring them back up Mt. Sinai.
