The Ten Plagues of Egypt

I've discovered an old diary from an Egyptian living in the time just before the Exodus, but a few of the words on the old document I cannot quite make out. He seems to have been plagued by something... Perhaps you can help me out.

Dear Diary, Plague entry 1-2;
Today seemed like an ordinary day, until I began to smell a great stink. The town was gathered around the , and as I approached, I discovered it had been turned into ! Disgusting! Surely nothing could survive here, I thought. But, just as soon as I turned, I heard a rumbling. Hundreds; no, thousands of emerged from the vile stench. This was an . However would we get rid of these small beasts?

Dear Diary, Plague entry 3-5;
Days have passed. The animal attack from earlier this week is over, but the clean up has been horrible. What is more, while I was cleaning my house, all the on the furniture failed to settle... Why, they had become (where were those pesky amphibians when you need them?)! Sadly, that's not all we have had to deal with. A bigger problem bugs us; all of us Egyptians and our animals are suffering. The entire nation is with ! What is worse, there is a great on our land. It is not affecting our people though, no. Our seem to be dying to the unknown illness.

Dear Diary, Plague entry 6-7;
I lie in bed as I write, too much in pain to move. All of Egypt has been with . This is just as well, I am safe at home. I fear for the men and animals still in the fields. It has been roaring and so many have died to the onslaught of that have hit our nation; never have I seen anything like this. Perhaps, when it's over, I can use some to ease my pain.

Dear Diary, Plague entry 8-9;
The storm just barely subsided. There was so much destruction, we had so little left. Why, why must the ground now be covered with of ? They devoured everything that has remained. Diary, I write this to you with a small candle on my bedside. For three days we have been in complete . It's on my skin. I feel it. I have not been able to see or speak to anyone, even within my own home. I must sleep now, tomorrow will perhaps be a better day.

Dear Diary, Plague entry 10;
I woke this morning to loud wailing across the entire nation. You could hear it echoing, louder than I could ever imagine. I ran out of the bedroom, shocked with horror to what I discovered; the of my . Not just mine. My neighbors, every animal, even the mighty himself. We have all suffered loss, but he seems exceptionally angry, and has told the Israelites to leave. Diary, this is my final entry.

Sincerely,
The Plagued One

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The first plague (Exodus 7:17,18) involved Moses striking the Nile to turn it into blood. Some accounts indicate that Pharaoh's magicians did the same, adding another layer of blood. What is more, even water untouched from the strike turned to blood; any water in jars, or kept elsewhere, away from the source, suffered the same fate. Egyptians were able to obtain fresh water by digging along the banks of the Nile, where water could be accessed (with difficulty) and drank. This lasted for one week.

The second plague (Exodus 8:1-4) involved the emergence of frogs from the Nile, and not just a few; an invasion of them. The frogs jumped everywhere; including people's beds and ovens. For three days this lasted, and the stench and clean-up from the dead frogs lasted even longer.

The third (Exodus 8:16,17) and fourth (Exodus 8:20-23) plagues go somewhat hand in hand. These involved infestations of insects. First, dust turned to gnats. Imagine how much dust is found within an entire nation, and each speck becoming an annoying gnat! The fourth plague was of a larger pest: flies. It is likely these were biting flies, as the text indicates these are creatures capable of actually harming people and livestock, not just irritating them. In some versions, this aspect is perceived as possibly wild animals, and not just insects. If that was not enough for the livestock to handle between the gnats and the flies, the fifth plague (Exodus 9:1-3) has them dying to a plague. This pestilence of livestock would create a lot of issues for those relying on them for many aspects of their lives.

The gnats returned to dust again, it seems, as the sixth plague (Exodus 9:8,9) sees Moses throwing a handful of soot in the air, becoming an entire fine dust cloud over all of Egypt, inflicting painful boils on all living creatures. Not to be outdone by some boils, plague seven (Exodus 9:13-24) has Egypt endure the worst storm it has ever seen. Lightning, thunder, and most importantly, hailstones. Following a one-day warning to bring all livestock and humans indoors, a great hailstorm followed that killed any who did not obey the alarm.

Imagine how much destruction such large hailstones could cause. Whatever vegetation was left from this storm suffered from the eighth plague (Exodus 10:3-6), however. Locusts swarmed the nation, devouring all vegetation it could find; trees of the field and crops obliterated. These locusts filled houses, sweeping through and leaving destruction in their wake.

The ninth plague (Exodus 10:21-23) befell the Egyptians next, this time with three days of complete darkness. The darkness was so intense, no one could leave their homes or see anyone during this time. This wasn't just a darkness you could "see", but a darkness so intense it was actually felt.

The final plague (Exodus 11:4-6) was by far the most intense. One night, Israelites marked their doors with lamb's blood, to be saved from the final plague on Egypt. At midnight, every firstborn in Egypt died, aside from those whose doors had been marked. This included everyone from Pharaoh's firstborn to the firstborn of the slaves, and all the livestock too.

It was after the tenth plague that Pharaoh decided enough was enough, and sent the Israelites away, taking away whatever they wanted with them, and in hopes of a blessing to save Egypt.
