Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "At that time Jesus said, 'I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the _______________, and revealed them to ____________'" (Matthew 11:25, New International Version). Who had the Lord of heaven and earth hidden things from and revealed things to?

Answer: wise and learned / little children

In this passage, it seems Jesus is teaching that the things of God aren't acquired by wealth, power or knowledge but rather by childlike faith and trust.

2. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, ________..." (Matthew 11:28,29 New International Version). In this passage, why did Jesus say the weary and burdened should learn from him?

Answer: "for I am gentle and humble in heart"

Jesus went on to say, "...and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:29,30)

Coming to Jesus certainly seems a simple instruction.

3. In Matthew 7:20 Jesus teaches about how to know whether a person is good or bad, no matter how they appear on the outside. How, according to the New King James Version text?

Answer: by their fruits

Jesus' teaching is simple:
You can tell what a person is by looking not at their appearance, nor their charisma, nor their teaching, but by looking at their character and their actions.
Just ask yourself, "What 'fruit' is this person's life bearing?"
Even a child can understand that this works!

4. Why did Jesus state that His Father judged no man, but had committed all judgments unto His Son, in John 5:22-23?

Answer: so that all men would honour the Son as they honour the Father

In the fifth chapter of John, Jesus was responding to the people of his day who had a problem with him healing a man with an illness or infirmity on the Sabbath day.
Since no labour was to be performed on the Sabbath, they first confronted the man who was carrying his bedroll after he was healed. (This constituted a form of labour, as far as they were concerned.) When they later found out that Jesus was the man who had healed him, they desired to kill Jesus for daring to profane their Sabbath by healing the man (another form of labour).

They became even more incensed when they heard him respond to their accusations with the statement, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." (John 5:17, King James Version)

This statement just flew in the face of everything that they believed. For Jesus to claim to be the son of God was more than they could stand, so they wanted to kill him even more.

Later in the chapter, we read how Jesus further explained to them his claim of status as the Son of God, and in verses 22 and 23 we read,
"For the Father judgeth no man; but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son; even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him."

5. A lawyer asked Christ what the greatest commandment in the law was. Jesus responded by telling him the two greatest commandments that "hang on all the law and the prophets." (Matthew 22:40) What two are these?

Answer: Love God and neighbor.

"Jesus said unto him, 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.'" (Matthew 22:37-39, King James Version)

Christ makes it clear that all his followers are called to live focused on love.

6. How many times in the New International Version of the Bible does Jesus say, "I love the Father"?

Answer: One time

Only one time in the whole Bible does Jesus say, "I love the Father." John 14:31 (New International Version) tells us that Jesus said, "But the world must learn that I love the Father and I do exactly what my Father has commanded me." This is another argument that suggests that the Father and the Son are separate.

7. Jesus boldly predicted he would rise from the dead in the four Gospels and often proclaimed he was the way to eternal life. On this theme, how many people did Jesus raise from the dead in the four Gospels?

Answer: Three

Jesus brought the dead back to life on three different occasions in the Gospels. They include Jairus' 12-year-old daughter (Matthew 9:18-19, Mark 5:22-24 and Luke 8:41-42); the widow's son at Nain (Luke 7:11-15) and Lazarus at Bethany (John 11:1-44). His first miracle was turning the water into wine (John 2:1-11) and one of his last miracles was his resurrection from the dead, according to all four Gospels.

In John 14:6, in the NIV Bible, Jesus boldly proclaims: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Then in John 3:16, he makes the famous declaration: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

8. In the King James Bible in Mark 10:25, it says, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a _____ man to enter the kingdom of God." What kind of man is Jesus referring to in this teaching?

Answer: rich

Jesus made this statement in response to the story of the rich young ruler who loved his wealth and riches more than entering into the kingdom of God. Jesus was not saying that it was impossible for the rich and wealthy to enter the kingdom of God but then, as today, many equated riches and wealth with a sign of their "blessing and spirituality". By using this illustration Jesus was showing one cannot trust in these to be a part of God's kingdom, but that man's reward is a gift of God through faith.

This is a teaching of importance as it is found in three of the Gospels. You can read the story in Matthew 19, Mark 10 and Luke 18.

This may only be a legend but it is believed that as with most cities in those times, there was a great wall around the city for protection in times of war and there were gates in these walls to allow entry and exit to the city. So it could have been with Jerusalem. Beside a main gate of Jerusalem there was a small gate which was called the 'eye of the needle.' At night the main gates would be shut for protection but late comers could still enter or exit the city through this small gate. A camel could only go through this gate if it was unloaded of all its burden and forced onto its knees. The camel would then have to be pulled or pushed through this gate with great difficulty. You can still see these in today's world especially in the large roller doors of warehouses, where they have a small door to allow people in and out without having to open up the main roller door.

9. Jesus taught that he was "the way, the truth and the life". Which of the gospels can this be found in?

Answer: John

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." -- John 14:6. Jesus says this while he is talking to the disciples about Heaven. He says that he will go prepare a place for them and, as Christians believe, everyone who believes in Jesus and gets saved. He says that they know the way to where he is going. Thomas says "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" Then Jesus says that he is the way, truth and life and that no one comes to the father but through him.

10. In Romans chapter 16 (King James Version), the apostle Paul gives a stern warning to those who would mislead new Christians or those not well versed in the scriptures. The Bible says: "they serve not our Lord Jesus Christ by deceiving the hearts of the simple with fair speech." Whom or what does the Bible say they are actually serving?

Answer: Their own belly

In Romans 16:17-18, the Bible states: "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple." The false doctrines and those who teach them are nothing new. People have been deceiving those unfamiliar with God's word from the time of the apostles. They did so then, and still do for personal gain or "their own belly."
