Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which gospel or gospels will you find an account of Jesus calming the storm at sea?

Answer: Matthew, Mark, and Luke only

The story of calming the storm at sea is found in Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:37-41, and Luke 8:22-25. In all three accounts, the panicking disciples awaken Jesus because they are afraid of drowning. Jesus rebukes them in all three gospels, as well.
2. Only one gospel contains two accounts of Jesus raising someone else from the dead. Which one?

Answer: Luke

Only Luke contains the story of Jesus reviving the widow's dead son (Luke 7:11-15). All three synoptic gospels contain the story of the resuscitation of Jairus' daughter (Matthew 9:18-25, Mark 5:22-42, Luke 8:41-56). Lazarus, the most famous instance of Jesus raising someone from the dead, is found only in John (John 11:1-44).
3. In which gospel or gospels will you find an account of Jesus walking on the water?

Answer: Matthew, Mark, and John only

This is very unusual. Generally, John is the odd gospel out, while the three synoptic gospels all agree. However, Luke for some reason omits one of the most amazing of Jesus' miracles, while John includes it. The account is found in Matthew 14:25-33, Mark 6:48-51, and John 6:19-21.

Incidentally, the famous story of Peter attempting to join Jesus in walking on water is found in Matthew.
4. Jesus' first miracle is commonly considered to be changing the water into wine at the wedding in Cana. Which gospel or gospels contain this account?

Answer: John only

Like the story of Lazarus, the famous story of the wedding in Cana is only found in John (John 2:1-11).
5. Jesus cured a man with a withered hand in the synagogue. His enemies accused him of breaking the sabbath and thereby violating the law. In which gospel or gospels is this story told?

Answer: Matthew, Mark, and Luke only

This story is found only in the synoptic gospels (Matthew 12:10-13, Mark 3:1-5, Luke 6:6-10). The story is told very similarly in all three. John does not relate this miracle.
6. In Capernaum, Jesus healed a member of a Gentile official's household. In two gospels, the official is described as a centurion and the person in need of healing as a servant or a slave. In another gospel, he is simply referred to as a royal official and it is his son who requires healing. Which gospel does NOT tell this story in any form?

Answer: Mark

Matthew and Luke give very similar accounts of this story (Matthew 8:5-13, Luke 7:1-10). It is thought that both evangelists may have obtained the story from the "Q" source that Mark did not use. Scholars consider that John's version, ("royal official" and "son") found in John 4:46-54, is sufficiently similar that it is another version of the same miracle.
7. Four of the disciples were fishermen. Two gospels tell stories in which the disciples are unable to catch fish until Jesus intervenes. In both cases their nets are then full to bursting. One evangelist narrates an account of a miraculous catch during Jesus' ministry. The other story takes place after the Resurrection. In which two gospels are there accounts of miraculous fishing?

Answer: Luke and John

The miracle recorded in Luke takes place before the Resurrection (Luke 5:1-11). John's account takes place after the Resurrection (John 21:1-11). As is common in the post-Resurrection stories, the disciples do not at first recognize Jesus.
8. The Transfiguration is the traditional name for the remarkable occasion when Jesus is revealed in his glory beside Moses and Elijah. This event is witnessed by Peter, James, and John. In which gospel or gospels will you find this event?

Answer: Matthew, Mark, and Luke only

The Transfiguration is found in all three synoptic gospels (Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-8, Luke 9:28-36). It has been suggested that Jesus does not need to reveal himself in his glory in the Gospel According to John since in John's account he never conceals his divine nature.
9. After the Resurrection, Jesus joins two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The disciples walk and talk with him for some time. They do not recognize him until Jesus breaks bread with them at an inn. As soon as they recognize him, Jesus vanishes. Which evangelist recorded this post-Easter miracle?

Answer: Luke

This story is found in Luke 24:13-35. The significance of the breaking of the bread may relate to the Eucharist.
10. Which gospel or gospels contain the story of feeding the five thousand with five loaves and two fish?

Answer: All four gospels

Aside from the Resurrection itself (which is a very different matter indeed), the only miracle that is found in all four gospels is the feeding of the five thousand.
