Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Traditionally, who were John's parents?

Answer: Zebedee and Salome

John's brother was James. In Christian tradition, the latter would go on to be called St. James the Greater. (This is to distinguish him from St. James the Less, to whom he and John were not related.) The canonical Gospels refer to Zebedee as John's father. Salome is mentioned in Mark 15:40 and Matthew 20:20.

The Catholic Encyclopedia credits her with being the mother of Zebedee's children. Salome is also referred to as such in the Eastern Orthodox tradition. Salome appears in some non-canonical early Christian writings, such as the Protoevangelion of James.
2. Before they met Jesus, in what trade were John and his brother James employed?

Answer: They were fishermen

John, James and their father fished in the Lake of Genasereth. Before the brothers met Jesus, they were followers of John the Baptist.
3. John and his brother answered Jesus' call to follow him. In the gospel of Mark, which was the first major city in which they stopped?

Answer: Capernaum

"And they entered into Capernaum, and forthwith upon the Sabbath days going into the synagogue, he (Jesus) taught them." (Mark 1:21) Mark wrote that the people were "astonished" by the preaching of Christ.
4. John, along with Peter and James, was present when Jesus performed a miracle. The story is related in Mark 5. Which of the following miracles was it?

Answer: Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead

Jairus is called "one of the rulers of the synagogue." (Mark 5:22) This is also the chapter (Mark 5:25-34) in which Jesus heals the woman with the issue of blood.
5. John was present at the Transfiguration.

Answer: True

Other than John, only two other disciples accompanied Jesus. "And after six days Jesus taketh unto him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: And he was transfigured before them." (Matthew 17:1-2)
6. When Jesus went to pray in the garden of Gethsemane, he was accompanied by James, John and Peter. The hour was late. What happened to the disciples?

Answer: They fell asleep

"And he cometh to his disciples and findeth them asleep." (Mt. 26:40) Shortly thereafter is the arrival of Judas, which precipitates Christ's arrest.
7. In Christ's dying agony on the Cross, he commended someone to the care of John. Who was it?

Answer: Mary

John 19:25-27 reads that "the disciple Jesus loved," a reference to John himself, was among the people standing by the Cross. Jesus spoke: "He said to His mother, 'Woman, behold your Son.' Then he said to the disciple, 'Behold your mother.'"
8. In the First Century, Christians were often subject to persecution. What torture did John endure at the orders of the Roman emperor Domitian?

Answer: Boiling in oil

Tradition has it that John survived this incident and was then exiled for a year to the Greek island of Patmos. The book of Revelation has long been attributed to John. Among some modern scholars, opinion is divided as to whether another person may have been the author.
9. John spent many years in Jerusalem. Later, he traveled and preached the Gospel throughout Asia Minor. The last years of his life were spent in what city?

Answer: Ephesus

The Turkish name of the city is Efes. It is located in northwest Turkey.
10. Which of these epithets has *not* traditionally been used to refer to St. John?

Answer: St. John the Editor

John was one of the few apostles believed to have died of natural causes. Most of the Apostles became martyrs. St. John's University in New York is named after John.
