The Seven Deadly Sins: Gluttony Quiz

Just like my last quiz on Sloth, this one will focus solely on gluttony. Much of the info comes from the History Channel series "Seven Deadly Sins". Again keep an eye out for the other five sins and be sure to check out Sloth if you haven't already.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Evagrius Ponticus placed gluttony as number one on his list of deadly temptations.

Answer: true

Evagrius Ponticus was an exiled monk who first exposed the eight deadly temptations that plagued monks. Evagrius Ponticus wrote his list specifically for members of the church sometime between AD 345 and AD 399. Gluttony was placed first on the list because Evagrius believed that the desire for food would make people focus more on their next meal rather than on God. Or that it could lead to crimes against other people (e.g. hoarding food from the poor).
2. St. Thomas Aquinas named six ways that gluttony could be committed. Which option is not one of them?

Answer: eating before/after prayer

St. Thomas Aquinas was a philosopher and theologian. Aquinas made his list sometime between AD 1225 and AD 1274 to battle the sin of gluttony. The six ways that he listed to commit gluttony were eating too soon, eating too expensively, eating too much, eating too eagerly, eating too daintily (savoring or taking small bites so the food will last longer), and eating wildly.
3. What did St. Thomas Aquinas add to his food as a means of keeping himself from committing the sin of gluttony?

Answer: Ashes

Aquinas sprinkled ash on his food to keep himself from enjoying it. Had he totally refrained from eating, which he considered the best way to avoid gluttony, he might have seemed ungrateful when at the tables of people who had given him food and lodging for the night.
4. Monks in the time of St. Thomas Aquinas had a special room where they could go to commit gluttony without violating their oath against sin.

Answer: true

The purpose for this room was so that if the monks sinned it would not count against them. It wouldn't count against them is because the room was not considered part of the monastery.
5. Sometime between AD 1308 and AD 1321, Dante Alighieri gave his vision of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven in his "Divine Comedy". On which of the nine rings of Hell did Dante place the gluttonous?

Answer: third

On the third circle, the gluttonous are guarded by Cerberus and forced to lie in a slush made of freezing rain, black snow, and hail. The slush is symbolic of the waste that the gluttonous people made of themselves when they were alive.
6. According to Dante, while in Purgatory sinners must accomplish a certain task to be rid of their sin and ascend to Heaven. What was the task for gluttons?

Answer: avoid food in all of its forms

According to Dante if the soul doesn't eat it wastes away to nothing just as a living being does. However, in the case of a sinner that is good because it kills the shade that possessed the soul and forced it to sin in life.
7. In 1589, Peter Binsfeld published as book called "Binsfeld's Classification of Demons". Each sin was given a demonic lord. What was the name of gluttony's demon?

Answer: Beelzebub

In the book each Demon was assigned a place in Satan's army and was commanded by a demonic lord. And just like gluttony each of the demonic lords was in command of a sin. As is typical of Demons, they also all possess the ability to possess humans.
8. What animal symbolizes gluttony?

Answer: Hog

The hog is the symbol of gluttony because they are well known for eating anything. The pig is also a symbol of gluttony because like the hog they will eat anything that is placed in front of them.
9. What color is symbolic of gluttony?

Answer: Orange

Orange is a common color of gluttony because the color itself represents fall or the harvest season, a time when food would be abundant. Orange also acts as an appetite stimulant.
10. What heavenly virtue counteracts gluttony?

Answer: Abstinence

In this case, abstinence means to abstain from food or fast. Therefore, fasting is the modern interpretation of abstinence, since Jesus resisted the temptation of gluttony by fasting, Catholics often give up something for Lent as a tribute to this.
