Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these countries have an officially recognised state religion. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: New Zealand

While most nations do not have a state religion in the 21st century, those that do aren't necessarily theocracies. A theocracy is a form of government in which political decisions are determined by the doctrine of a particular religion. Countries with a recognised state religion may still have secular government, and may (and often do) recognise the freedom of worship of citizens who don't follow the state religion.

Of the options named, Buddhism is the official religion of Cambodia; Sunni Islam is the state religion of Bangladesh; and the Eastern Orthodox Church of Greece is established in Greece.
2. Three of these men of the Bible share the same first name. Who is the odd one out?

Answer: The son God gave Adam to replace his dead son, Abel

I'm referring, of course, to Joseph. The name Joseph (or Yosef) means "God will increase".

In the Old Testament, Joseph was one of the sons of Jacob--his first by his wife Rachel. In the New Testament, Joseph was the husband of the Virgin Mary and is commonly known as Jesus' foster father. Another Joseph is mentioned in all four Gospels as the man whose tomb Jesus was buried in--Joseph of Arimathea.
3. The Qur'an refers to three different faith groups as "people of the book". Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Buddhists

The term "People of the Book" refers to members of religions, other than Islam, that have a revealed scripture and who recognise the God of Abraham as the only god. The Qur'an includes a number of verses instructing followers to extend tolerance towards people of the book.

The precise identity and practices of the Sabians, an ancient Abrahamic faith with no modern adherents, is subject to ongoing scholarly debate.
4. Three of these words refer to important concepts in Hinduism. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Mitama

While many non-Hindus may think of balancing exercises when they see the word "yoga", it is a school of Hindu philosophy that focuses on physical, mental and spiritual discipline. Samsara (which refers to the cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth), yoga and karma are also fundamental concepts in Buddhism.

Mitama is a Japanese word referring to a spirit, or the soul of a deceased person. The Mitama Festival is an annual Shinto festival commemorating the dead.
5. In Christian theology, three of the following are known as the theological virtues. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Courage

The theological virtues are referred to in the Bible, in arguably one of its most famous verses. 1 Corinthians 13:13 reads, "And so faith, hope and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love".

In some versions of the Bible, the Greek word "agapē" is translated into English as "charity" rather than "love".

Christian theology also recognises four so-called cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, temperance and courage.
6. Four men are named as brothers of Jesus in the New Testament. Three of them are shown here. Who is the odd one out?

Answer: Jacob

The brothers of Jesus were identified as James, Joses (sometimes rendered Joseph), Judas and Simon (Matthew 13:55 and Mark 6:3). The most notable, known as James the Just, was a leader of the early Christian community in Jerusalem.

Some Christian denominations maintain that Jesus had no blood siblings, which would conflict with the doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary. According to this belief, the references to Jesus' brothers would more accurately be read as cousins or other close male relatives.
7. According to Buddhist tradition, three "marks of existence" are shared by all sentient beings. Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Omniscience

In Pali, the language of many early Buddhist scriptures, the three marks of existence are called annica (impermanence), dukkha (suffering) and anatta (non-self). A fourth is sometimes mentioned: nirvana. No, not the band.
8. Three of these are groups within Islam. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Zen

The majority of Muslims worldwide are Sunni, although Shia Muslims dominate the populations of some countries, including Iran and Iraq. Alawi Muslims are members of a mystical group who belong to the Twelver branch of Shia Islam. Most of the world's three million Alawi (also known as Alawites, Nusayris and Ansaris) live in Syria, with sizeable populations also residing in Lebanon and Turkey.

Zen is a subset of Buddhism, originating in China.
9. According to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, God is one being of three divine persons. Which of the following is NOT part of the trinity in mainstream theology?

Answer: The Mother

According to the Trinity doctrine, the Father, Son (Jesus Christ) and Holy Spirit are co-equal, co-eternal and consubstantial. The Trinity is one of the sacred mysteries of Christian faith. Don't ask me to explain any more than that--it's not called a mystery for nothing!
10. In addition to the book bearing his name, the prophet Jeremiah is traditionally credited with writing three other books of the Bible. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Psalms

Jeremiah is one of the major prophets of the Hebrew Bible.

Many of the Psalms are specifically attributed to King David, and he was traditionally regarded as the author of the whole book. However, modern scholars believe that the psalms recorded in the Bible were authored by a number of different authors.
