Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mark 6:16 contains this quote from an extremely surprised man: "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!" Who made the statement?

Answer: Herod

The correct answer is Herod. He made the statement after hearing reports about Jesus preaching to the people and performing miracles. Herod, of course, ordered John the Baptist beheaded as the request of his wife's daughter.

After hearing reports of what Christ was doing, Herod was convinced it had to be John the Baptist. Mark 6:14 quotes Herod as saying, "John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him."

Verse 15 goes on to state others believed the reports about Jesus were actually about Elijah, or one of the other prophets.

Then in verse 16, Herod makes the statement: "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!"
2. Mark 5:23 tells of a father making a passionate plea to Jesus: "My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live." What is the name of the father?

Answer: Jairus

Jairus is the correct answer. Scripture states he was a synagogue ruler and his twelve-year-old daughter was raised from the dead. The account of the miracle appears in Mark 5:21-43 and Luke 8:40-56

The account of the unnamed girl being raised from the dead is one of most popular in the New Testament. In the accounts in Mark and Luke, it tells of people weeping for the dead girl outside her home. When Jesus appeared and stated the girl was not dead but was simply sleeping, the 'mourners' laughed at Him. A few moments later, however, their laughter turned to total amazement when Christ raised the girl from the dead.
3. Luke 1:46-48 contains the following quote from a young woman: "My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed."

Answer: Mary

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the correct answer. According to Scripture, she gave birth to Jesus while still a virgin. Many theologians believe she may have been as young as 14 when she gave birth.
4. Luke 3:11 contains the following quote: "He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise." Who made the statement?

Answer: John the Baptist

The speaker was John the Baptist. According to Matthew 3:4, John was clothed in camel hair and a leather belt and ate locusts and wild honey.

Luke 3:7-11 gives this account of his preaching style: "Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, 'Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.' So the people asked him, saying, 'What shall we do then?' He answered and said to them, 'He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.'"
5. "For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he," is a quote found in Luke 7:28. Who made the statement?

Answer: Jesus

The statement was made by Jesus. Luke 7:18-22 tells of John the Baptist sending messengers to Jesus to determine if He was the Messiah. Verse 22 tells of Jesus replying to the messengers: "Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me."

According to Scripture, after the messengers departed, Jesus had some highly complimentary things to say to the multitude about John the Baptist. Luke 7:24-28 quotes Jesus as saying: "'What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written:
'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.'
'For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.'"
6. "Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?" is a question asked by a man in apparent defense of Jesus in John 7:51. Who made the statement?

Answer: Nicodemus

Nicodemus is the correct answer. He made the statement during a debate in the Sanhedrin about Jesus.

In John 7:51, he asks a question in defense of Jesus: "Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?"

The question, however, was shot down by members of the Sanhedrin. They pointed out Galilee was basically a backwater and prophets do not come from there. Verse 52 quotes unnamed Pharisees as saying to Nicodemus: "Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee."

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, the Pharisees were way off the mark on their statement about Galilee. The notes indicate the prophets Jonah, Hosea and Nahum were from Galilee and "perhaps Elijah, Elisha and Amos were from Galilee or close to it."

Nicodemus, of course, was the man who visited Jesus at night and was told he must be born again, as per the third chapter of John.
7. John 9:25 contains the following quote made by a man who was healed by Jesus: "Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see."

Answer: No name is given

No name is given for the blind man healed by Jesus in the ninth chapter of John. The account of Jesus restoring the blind man's vision takes up the entire ninth chapter.

According to Scripture, Jesus spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva and then used the clay to anoint the eyes of the blind man. After Jesus told the blind man to wash in the pool of Siloam, he had his sight restored.

The Pharisees, however, were indignant about Jesus restoring the man's sight because the miracle was performed on the Sabbath, Scripture says.

Verse 24 tells of the Pharisees speaking to the man who had his sight restored, insisting he "should give God the glory" for they were convinced Jesus was a sinner.

In verse 25, the man tells the Pharisees he doesn't really care what they think about Jesus, stating: "Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see."
8. Acts 2:36 contains the following quote: "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." Who made the statement?

Answer: Peter

The speaker was Peter. According to Scripture, he made the statement during the Day of Pentecost when the disciples "were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."

Scripture tells of onlookers being in complete amazement about what was taking place while others said the believers were "full of new wine."

Acts 2:14-39 tells of Peter assuming leadership among the disciples and preaching the news of a resurrected Jesus Christ. However, before he gets into the grist of his message, Peter points out to the scoffers it was not possible for the disciples to be drunk "since it is only the third hour of the day."

It's during his message to the people, Peter made the statement, "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
9. Acts 5:38-39 contains the following quote: "And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it -- lest you even be found to fight against God." Who made the statement?

Answer: Gamaliel

Gamaliel is the correct answer. His name appears only twice in the New Testament, but there's no doubt his argument had a major impact on the spread of Christianity.

Gamaliel offered his advice after the apostles were jailed for preaching about a resurrected Jesus Christ and then set free by an angel of the Lord, according to Acts 5:17-21.

Scripture states after the apostles were set free, they resumed preaching the Gospel message only to result in them being arrested once again by the Pharisees.

After Gamaliel offered his advice it appears there was a change of heart among the Pharisees.

Acts 5:40-42 explains things this way: "And they agreed with him [Gamaliel], and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ."
10. "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty," is a quote found in Revelation 1:8. According to the vision being reported, who said that God could be described in this way?

Answer: Jesus

According to John of Patmos, the writer of Revelation, the statement was made by Jesus to him in a vision. The vision resulted in John writing Revelation, a book that has fascinated as well as perplexed its readers for centuries.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state this about Revelation 1:8: "The Lord God's description as the Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, means He is almighty from the Beginning to the End of all creation. This knowledge can be of great comfort to a person who is suffering (Revelation 1:9). The Lord is sovereingly guiding history toward its consummation, the victory of Christ over all (see 1 Corinthians 15:24-28)."
