The Stalker is Always There... Quiz

Taken for granted, the shadow is one of the most common visual elements known to humankind. Yet, while mythology and folklore animate this harmless shade of nature, it is often true that we disregard this phenomenon's intriguing characteristics.

Question 1 of 10
1. A shadow is cast when light is obstructed by a[n] ____ object. Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. One of the laws involved in shadows is that when an obstructing object moves, the shadow moves with speed proportional to the object's speed. Accordingly, the greater the projected distance, the faster the shadow appears to move. So, if a shadow were to be projected across any number of light years, could a shadow theoretically break the fundamental law and travel faster than light?

Question 3 of 10
3. Which of these astronomical bodies is not capable of casting a shadow upon the Earth? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. If the Earth were to obstruct the light of the Sun from falling upon the Moon, what term would be applicable? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. There is a tree with a single, straight branch extending from halfway up the trunk. Correspondingly, there is a shadow for both the branch and the tree. Where do the shadow branch and the shadow tree meet? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. If there is a source of light without a specific point source, which of the following is true? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. If the Sun passes directly over an object, I.E, at noon, where is a shadow cast? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. This is directly proportional to the cotangent of the Sun's Elevation Angle relative to the horizon. Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. To take a brief break from the sciences, answer this. What is an unattended shadow also known as? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Finally. Shadows are not explicitly references to light and shade. Which of these examples is another kind of shadow? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A shadow is cast when light is obstructed by a[n] ____ object.

Answer: Opaque

An opaque object, like a human body, blocks the light. The shadow then comprises the silhouette of the obstructing object not exposed to the direct light.

Answer: No

From an observational standpoint the shadow would appear to move faster than light. However, a shadow has no physical manifestation. That is to say, while we might see a shadow, in truth we are only seeing the absence of light, which is not a tangible substance or form of matter. Thus, the shadow could never move faster than light, but rather only at light speed.
3. Which of these astronomical bodies is not capable of casting a shadow upon the Earth?

Answer: Mars

Mars never directly blocks the light of the sun to the Earth, which would cast a shadow. The Moon, Venus and Mercury can at times do this (at least partially) resulting in a shadow to fall across the Earth.
4. If the Earth were to obstruct the light of the Sun from falling upon the Moon, what term would be applicable?

Answer: Lunar Eclipse

This is self-evident, as the Moon, lunar, is being eclipsed by the Earth, which then casts a shadow across the moon, as no light can reach the Moon through the Earth. Conversely, if the Moon obstructs the light of the Sun to the Earth, it is known as a Solar Eclipse.
5. There is a tree with a single, straight branch extending from halfway up the trunk. Correspondingly, there is a shadow for both the branch and the tree. Where do the shadow branch and the shadow tree meet?

Answer: At the point of touch

Remember, a shadow is just that, a shadow of an object. Therefore, it is a duplicate, and will be seen as identical. If the branch is halfway up the trunk on the real tree, it will be halfway up the trunk on the shadow tree as well.
6. If there is a source of light without a specific point source, which of the following is true?

Answer: The wider the area covered by the light source, the more blurred the shadow.

As the light source widens, the shadow will continue to blur. This is because, rather than the obstructing object blocking the light as a whole, it merely functions to obstruct part of the light, which can bypass the object. The edges of the shadow are then blurred as light infringes upon the shaded area.
7. If the Sun passes directly over an object, I.E, at noon, where is a shadow cast?

Answer: Directly underneath the object

Once the light of the Sun reaches an angle of 90°, shadows are cast directly beneath objects, as the obstructing object would be in the vertical path of light.
8. This is directly proportional to the cotangent of the Sun's Elevation Angle relative to the horizon.

Answer: Shadow length [based on time of day]

This formula can be followed to determine the length of a shadow based on the time of day. At sunset and sunrise, accordingly, when angle=0° and cotangent is infinite, shadows can be considerably long. In contrast, by noon, the shadows will be short and set to a minimal area.
9. To take a brief break from the sciences, answer this. What is an unattended shadow also known as?

Answer: Ghost

It is, of course, a ghost, one of the most common apparitions in folklore and mythology. The leftover remnants of a human body, or, the soul left to wander the Earth forever more.
10. Finally. Shadows are not explicitly references to light and shade. Which of these examples is another kind of shadow?

Answer: Rain shadow

A rain shadow is a natural occurrence in which a mountain range shields a dry area from a prevailing wind, thus causing a lack of rain on one side of the mountain, in the same way an object will obstruct light.
