The first Tour Down Under was first held in 1999. Stuart O' Grady won it that year. He also won the 2001 Tour Down Under. He is the first rider to win the race twice.

The first break contained seven riders. The breakaway got away 18km into the stage, only to be caught at the 30km mark. As the peloton caught the first breakaway three riders took off the front. In the break were Mickaël Buffaz, Dimitri Champion, and Richie Porte. Mickäel rode for Cofidis, he placed third overall in the stage. Dimitri rode for Bouygues Télécom. Richie Porte rode for Team UniSA-Australia.

The break wouldn't succeed. Mark Renshaw wound up winning the stage. Mark rode for Crèdit Agricole.
