First run in 1907, Milan-San Remo is the first "Monument" on the calendar. It was not held in 1916, 1944, and 1945 because of war. Lucien Petit-Breton was the first winner. Alfredo Binda was the first rider to win Milan-San Remo while wearing the World Championship rainbow jersey in 1931.

Cavendish followed up his outstanding 2008 with a great run in 2009. He took 2 stages in both the Tour of Qatar and Tour of California before out-dueling Heinrich Haussler for the Milan-Sanremo crown.

The Giro di Lombardia was started in 1905 as the Milan-Milan. It is best known for the climb over the hill of Madonna del Ghisallo. The 2008 winner was Damiano Cunego. It was Cunego's second victory in a row and third over all.

Rik van Looy won one of the Monuments 8 times between 1958 and 1965. Roger De Vlaeminck notched 11 monument victories between 1970 and 1979. Eddy Merckx won the Monuments 19 times between 1967 and 1976. Merckx was the first to win all five Monuments and all three Grand Tours in a career.

In 1972, Merckx won Milan-San Remo, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Giro di Lombardia, the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia. Sean Kelly had 9 victories in four of the monuments, but was never able to pull off a win in De Ronde, finishing second in 1984, 1986, and 1987.
