The first break was a group of three riders. Guillaume Blot, Markel Irizar, and Aaron Kemps made up the breakaway. They would not succeed. Guillaume Blot rode for Cofidis, Markel Irizar rode for Euskaltel-Euskadi, and Aaron Kemps rode for UniSA-Australia.

As they were caught many riders tried to breakaway, none would make it to the finish. Allan Davis won the stage, and took the overall lead in the 2009 Tour Down Under. Allan rode for Team Quick Step.

Stage 6 came down to a sprint finish. Francesco Chicchi beat out Robbie McEwen and Graeme Brown for the stage win. Francesco rode for Liquigas. This was Francesco's first stage win in a Tour Down Under. Robbie rode for Team Katusha. Graeme rode for Rabobank.

Française des Jeux led the team classification since Stage 4 of the 2009 Tour Down Under. Française des Jeux is based in France. Team Milram lead the team classification after Stage 1, but lost the lead to Rabobank when Stage 2 ended. Quick Step and Astana didn't ever lead the team classification.

José Joaquín Rojas Gil lead the young riders classification since Stage 2 of the 2009 Tour Down Under. Jacopo Guanieri lead the classification after Stage 1, but then lost the lead to José. José rode for Caisse d'Epargne. José also finished third overall in the 2009 Tour Down Under.
