Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Grand Depart began in Leeds, England. Who was on hand to cut the white ribbon to begin the race?

Answer: Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

The Duchess of Cambridge, informally known as Kate, also presented Marcel Kittel, the stage winner, with the Yellow jersey.
2. The British sprinter expected win the first stage ending in Harrogate, his mother's hometown, crashed out 200 meters (656 ft.) from the finish line. Who is the sprinter who saw his dream to win in front of his family dashed?

Answer: Mark Cavendish

German Marcel Kittel won the sprint and Mark Cavendish was transported to the hospital where it was found that he had a dislocated collarbone. Cavendish hoped the pain and swelling would diminish overnight and he would be able to continue racing. Unfortunately, both progressively increased during the night, and he was forced to abandon the Tour before second stage began in York.
3. Who was the first defending winner to quit the tour since Bernard Hinault pulled out in 1980?

Answer: Chris Froome

Even before the race even got underway, Britain's Chris Froome was favored to be a back-to-back Tour de France champion this year. But two crashes in the early stages caused this Titan of the sport to withdraw after his third crash, which occurred during stage five.
4. The leader for American team Garmin-Sharp abandoned the race after stage eleven, leaving the team with slim hopes of a successful tour. Which American podium contender abandoned the tour this year?

Answer: Andrew Talansky

Talansky's hopes of a podium finish were squelched after being involved in several heavy crashes during the first ten stages. He was dropped by the peloton on stage eleven, the wet and windy ride from Besancon to Oyonnax, finishing almost twelve minutes after the penultimate rider to cross the line in Oyonnax. Suffering severe back injuries, Talansky was unable to start stage twelve. Garmin was nevertheless determined to salvage something from this year's tour and devised a strategy to take advantage of a small elevation at the end of a long flat stage to strike with a powerful young climber who was a last minute addition to the team - Ramunas Navardauskas.

The plan was successful and Garmin was able to claim a stage nineteen victory in Bergerac.
5. Which former tour winner pulled out of this year's event following a crash on the stage from Cambridge to London?

Answer: Andy Schleck

After a crash on the third stage from Cambridge to London, former tour winner, Luxembourg cyclist Andy Schleck of Team Sky, damaged his knee severely and was unable to continue the race. Schleck, who had placed second in the 2010 Tour, was retrospectively gives the 2010 winner's spot after Spain's Alberto Contador was stripped of that year's title for doping.
6. Two-time tour winner Alberto Contador was among the cycling Titans to abandon the race because of injury. In which stage did he pull out?

Answer: Stage 10

After a hard crash on stage ten, Contador remounted his machine and raced ten miles to catch up with the peloton before realizing he was no longer able to pedal. It was later determined Contador had ridden that distance at high speed with a broken leg. He was flown back to Spain for surgery.
7. Which former world champion cyclist withdrew from the tour because of pneumonia?

Answer: Rui Costa

Portugal's Rui Costa, who rides for Lampre-Merida, withdrew from the tour when he was unable to begin stage sixteen, a mountain stage from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon. Costa had been 13th in the standings when he abandoned the race.
8. Peter Sagan had a lock on the Green sprinter's jersey early in the race but failed to win even one individual stage this year. Nevertheless he tied what former rider by winning the Green jersey in three consecutive tours.

Answer: Erik Zabel

In his eagerness to finally win a stage victory after so many near misses this year, Sagan fell off his bike on a rain slicked turn about a quarter mile to the finish line on stage nineteen. He accepted blame for the crash, although road conditions were a contributing factor. Generally Sagan is known for his exceptional bike-handling skills, though some riders and critics see him as a bit of a show-off.

As if to prove their point, the 24-year-old Sagan had popped a "no-hands" wheelie crossing the finishing line after the arduous seven mountain stage ten that included a twenty percent gradient on the last climb of the 100.3 mile course. If you didn't see it you wouldn't believe it.
9. Which cyclist won the time trial from Bergerac to Perigueux - the only time trial in the 2014 Tour de France?

Answer: Tony Martin

Omega Pharma-Quickstep cyclist and world time trial champion Tony Martin dominated stage twenty handily. Time trials are usually decided by seconds, but the powerful German rider came across the finish line one minute and thirty-nine second ahead of his nearest rival.

Despite having what cyclist refer to as "a big engine," Martin was perspiring so profusely toward the end of the thirty-four mile race that you could see the perspiration dripping from his face.
10. One cyclist dominated the 2014 tour, wore the Yellow jersey most days, proved adept at climbing, sprinting and even the time trial. Who won the 2014 Tour de France?

Answer: Vincenzo Nibali

Because so many of the cycling Titans had crashed out or abandoned the race, Nibali was determined to prove by his riding skills that he won on his own merit and not because the field had been diminished by the loss of so many top contenders. With his victory, Nibali also became only the sixth man to win all three Grand Tours - the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana.

He joins former cycling Titans Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gilmondi, Bernard Hinault, and Eddy Merckx together with current cyclist Alberto Contador in achieving this feat.
