On June 22 1986 England and Argentina met on the football field for the first time since the Falklands War. Referee Ali Bennaceur allowed the goal, Maradona claimed it was "the hand of god", England was defeated 2-1, and Argentina went on to win the World Cup.

Bayern took an early lead and held that led throughout the game until stoppage time in the second half when Sheringham equalized, and moments later Solskjaer scored the winner. Both goals came from David Beckham corner kicks. After the match manager Alex Ferguson said of his players "The players are incredible human beings. Tonight they never gave in, and we got the reward in the end."

England claimed the World Cup on home soil with Geoff Hurst becoming the first man to score a hat trick in a World Cup final. Controversy continues to this day regarding England's third goal.
