Shearer made his Newcastle debut against Man Utd in the Charity Shield as Newcastle lost 4-0. His first goal did not come until his home debut against Wimbledon on the 21st August 1996.
2. Out of Shearer's first five Newcastle goals, how many came from open play?

Answer: 2

The first was an excellent free kick followed by a penalties against Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers. His first goal from open play came against Leeds, and second against Aston Villa.

Answer: Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand and Phillipe Albert

One of the best matches in Newcastle's history, a fantastic result and perfect revenge for the 4-0 drubbing in the Charity Shield. Darren Peacock scored first with a header followed by David Ginola and Les Ferdinand. Then Shearer tapped in before Philippe Albert scored a beautiful lob past Peter Schmeichel from 25 yards.

Shearer began his career with Southampton where he scored 43 goals in 158 games including a debut hat-trick against Arsenal. He then moved to Blackburn where he scored an incredible 130 goals in 171 games and lifted the Premiership title. After his world record move to Newcastle, Shearer managed 35 goals in his first two seasons bringing his career total to 208.
