Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first MLB MVP award was awarded in 1911, when it was the "Chalmers Award." Frank Schulte of the Chicago Cubs won the National League award. Which Detroit Tigers star won the first ever American League MVP?

Answer: Ty Cobb

The first MVP award was named after car manufacturer Hugh Chalmers, who awarded cars to the two players with the highest batting averages in the 1910 season. In 1911, he created what became the league MVP award, the "Chalmers Award." Baseball writers selected Ty Cobb for the honor in the American League.
2. The New York Yankees were the powerhouse of the major leagues for many seasons. Several of the Yankee greats are on the all time top 10 in career homeruns in the World Series, but which New York Yankee set an all-time record with 18 career World Series home runs?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

It comes as no surprise that a New York Yankee holds the all time record for World Series blasts, as the Yankees have been a part of the most World Series. When Mickey Mantle retired in 1968, he held the record with 18, while the Great Bambino, Babe Ruth was second with 15. Duke Snider was third with 11.
3. The World Series Most Valuable Player award was first awarded in 1955. Up until 2017, the award was unnamed. For the 2018 season and beyond, the award was named after which Hall of Fame player?

Answer: Willie Mays

Despite not winning the award himself, the World Series MVP was named after Willie Mays on the 63rd anniversary of what is known as "The Catch." Mays made "The Catch" during the eighth inning of game one of the 1954 World Series. Making "The Catch," Mays kept the game tied at 2. The Giants went on to win 5-2, on their way to a World Series title in four games over the Cleveland Indians.
4. Paul Molitor, a member of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, is a member of the 3,000 hit club. He is also one of only a handful of players to also record a .300 batting average and 500 stolen bases. Which of the following is NOT a member of that exclusive club?

Answer: Manny Ramirez

Molitor recorded a triple for his 3,000th hit, the only one to do so at the time of his retirement at the end of the 1998 season. Molitor achieved a .300 average in 12 of his 21 seasons in the major leagues. Eddie Collins is also a member of the 3,000 hit, .300 average and 500 steal club, with Cobb, Suzuki, Wagner, and Molitor.

Answer: MVP

Snider and Campanella were both finalists for the 1955 Most Valuable Player award. The award was awarded to Campanella after a ballot controversy, where Campanella's name was allegedly written onto a ballot twice. Instead of disallowing the ballot, which would have given Snider the award, it was accepted, giving the MVP to Campanella.
8. Detroit Tigers star Al Kaline was inducted into Cooperstown in 1980, after an illustrious 22 year career. Did Kaline win a World Series title during his Hall of Fame career?
