Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which slugger, who smacked 714 home runs, wore the same jersey number as Dodger great Willie Davis?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Babe also wore the number 3. Willie Davis was a solid centerfielder for the Dodgers in 14 seasons of baseball, helping the Dodgers appear in 3 World Series.
2. Before becoming the Houston Astros, what was the team named?

Answer: Colt .45's

The Colt .45's started the franchise in 1962, for 3 seasons before becoming the Astros in 1965. The team had one 8th place, and two 9th place finishes before the name change, which apparently didn't help. It would be another 8 seasons, before the club would finish over .500.
3. Which one of these pitchers won the most games in the Major League in 2002?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Johnson went 24-5 for Diamondbacks, and helped them to the National League Division Series. His efforts won him the 2002 National League Cy Young Award.
4. I spent 17 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. 1968 was my greatest year, as I won the league MVP, a Gold Glove, and the Cy Young Award. Who am I?

Answer: Bob Gibson

Pack Robert Gibson, the only pitcher listed, had a stellar year in 1968. Although the Cardinals lost to the Tigers in the World Series 4 games to 3, Gibson won 2 games. Gibson beat runner-up Pete Rose for the National League MVP.
5. Which player led the Major League in home runs in 1961?

Answer: Roger Maris

1961 was the year that created baseball's most famous asterisk. It was the year that Maris beat Babe Ruth's home run record of 60 homes runs in a season. Ruth hit his 60 in a 154 game season, while Maris took 162 games. This is what created the asterik. The asterik was removed by Mark McGwire.
6. What team was skunked 4 games to 0, in the 1966 World Series?

Answer: Dodgers

The Orioles embarrassed the Dodgers in the classic in 1966. The Dodgers who were shut out 3 times, only scored 2 runs in the entire Series. From the first inning of the first game, the Orioles started out with 3 runs, and never stopped. Frank Robinson was the Series MVP.
7. Which player had the nickname of 'Toy Cannon'?

Answer: Jim Wynn

Jimmy Wynn began his career with Houston in 1963. He played for the club for 11 seasons, then became a Los Angeles Dodger. He retired short of the 300 home run mark, by hitting 291 four-baggers over 15 seasons.
8. Who was the first player to strike out over 2500 times in his career?

Answer: Reggie Jackson

Not just the first, but the only player in the 20th century to reach the 2000 plateau. 2597 times, Jackson has walked back to the dugout empty handed. 18 of his 21 seasons in baseball, he struck out over 100 times in a season. He did however, retire with 563 home runs.
9. Before becoming a Major League manager, Tom Lasorda pitched in the big leagues. How many career wins did he have?

Answer: 0

Lasorda played for the 1954 and 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, then retired in 1956 after playing for the Kansas City Athletics. With the Dodgers, he appeared in 8 games with no decision. With the Athletics, his record was 0-4 with an ERA of 6.15. Tom's career batting average was .077.
