Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reggie Jackson set a World Series record by hitting five home runs in a single six-game series in 1977. Which player before him hit four home runs in a four-game World Series in 1928?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The others are all Hall of Famers, but none were even born yet by 1928. The 1928 World Series saw the Yankees defeat the Cardinals four games to none. Lou batted .545 with six hits and nine RBIs in the series. He retired with going to seven World Series with the Yankees and winning six. Gehrig hit 10 World Series home runs and batted .361 in series play.
2. The Milwaukee Brewers joined the new American League in 1901. After their last place finish in their first season, they moved to St. Louis to become the St. Louis Browns. The franchise continued their dismal play season after season before moving to Baltimore in 1954 to become the Orioles. How many World Series did the Browns go to?

Answer: 1

The only promising season for the Browns was in 1944, when they went 89-65 in a season that they beat the Tigers by one game. Their 89 wins was not a large number in that decade to make to a series appearance, but they made it. Their crosstown Cardinals took care of the Browns in that World Series, four games to two.

After the franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954, the Orioles made their first World Series appearance in 1966, in a four games to none skunking of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
3. How many Cy Young awards did Hall of Fame pitching great Walter Johnson win during his 21-season career from 1907-1927?

Answer: 0

The Cy Young Award was first presented in 1956 to the most outstanding pitcher in the Major League season. It was named in honor of pitching great Cy Young who died in 1955. Walter died 10 years before the first presentation of the award. Johnson was a tremendous pitcher during his Washington Senator career.

He won two American League MVP awards in 1913 and 1924, and also threw an amazing three Triple Crowns in his career. He also threw a Major League leading 110 career shutouts.
4. Giants slugger Bobby Thomson is most famous for hitting "the shot heard 'round the world" in 1951. In Spring Training 1954, Bobby broke his leg. Who replaced him for the 1954 season in the Braves outfield?

Answer: Hank Aaron

The others were all pitchers in their careers. Thomson, after his historical shot against the Dodgers in the 1951 NL playoffs, was a Milwaukee Brave in 1954. When he broke his leg, the Braves' only option was a new kid named Henry Aaron. The rest would be history as Aaron set a career record by hitting 755 home runs.
5. The great Babe Ruth was the first player in history to hit 50 or more home runs in a season, and did it four times during his career. Who was the first slugger in history to hit 50+ in four consecutive seasons?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

The others never hit 50 home runs in a season even once. Sammy played most of his 18 seasons as a Chicago Cub and retired in 2007. As a Cub, Sosa went yard from 1998-2001. He hit 50 or more in those four consecutive seasons with 66, 63, 50, and 64 home runs, respectively. With his 66 hit in 1998, he still won the National League MVP Award over Mark McGwire of the Cardinals who hit a record-setting 70. Sammy retired with 609 home runs.
6. Right-handed pitching great Greg Maddux retired with 355 wins in 2008 after 23 seasons, mostly with the Cubs and Braves. Who was the first left-handed pitcher in history to win 350 career games?

Answer: Warren Spahn

The others listed were all great third basemen in their careers. Greg's 350+ wins was most likely the last 350-game winner in baseball history. Maddux won four consecutive Cy Young awards, but amazingly was a 20-game winner only twice in his career. Spahn pitched in 20 of his 21 seasons with the Braves from 1942-1965, interrupted by WWII. With the Cy Young Award beginning in 1956, Warren won it only once in 1957. What might have been with his 363-245 career record? He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1973.

Another Hall of Fame great left-handed pitcher, Steve Carlton, retired in 1988 with 329 career wins after 24 seasons.
7. In 2009, which Major League Baseball team won their 27th World Series in the history of their franchise?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees began their dominance in 1921 with their first World Series appearance, with Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, and a host of other Hall of Fame rostered greats. Their first World Series crown came in 1923 against the Giants in their third consecutive attempt in the promised land.

The team had tremendous surges with winning four consecutive series from 1936-1939, and winning another five consecutive from 1949-1953. Their 27th World Series crown came against the Phillies in 2009.
8. In what capacity was Leo Durocher inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Manager

"Leo the Lip" did play the game, but was mostly noted and inducted for his giving umpires the 'light of day' during his career. Leo managed from 1939-1973, including the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, and Astros. Durocher won over 2000 games as a manager, an elite mananger club, and left baseball in 1973. He died in 1991, then was inducted three years later.
9. Slugger Barry Bonds won an amazing seven National League MVP awards throughout his 22-season career. How many Rookie of the Year awards did he win?

Answer: 0

A player may only win the Rookie of the Year Award once in his validated rookie season. Bonds began his career in 1986 with the Pirates, and finished sixth in the rookie award to Todd Worrell of the Cardinals and Robby Thompson of the Giants. Both Worrell and Thompson were the only players to have more than 35% of the voting. Barry won his NL MVPs in 1990 and 1992 as a Pirate, then another five with the San Francisco Giants.
10. Congratulations went to the 2010 World Series Champions San Francisco Giants who defeated the Texas Rangers four games to one. Who was the World Series MVP?

Answer: Edgar Renteria

The others were all deceased. Edgar Renteria batted .412 with seven hits and six RBIs for the Giants. Edgar was in his 15th season, and his second with the Giants in 2010. It was the shortstop's first MVP of any kind.
