Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following muscles is least involved when performing the bench press?

Answer: Tibialis Anterior

Bench pressing is lifting weight with the use of the upper-body muscles. The pectoralis major muscles (common referred to as the pecs), the triceps, and deltoid muscles are all located in the upper body. The tibialis anterior is located in the leg muscle, which has little to do with bench pressing.
2. No injuries can occur during bench pressing whatsoever.

Answer: False

Many injuries can occur during the bench press if not done correct. Injuries can include tearing of the ligaments and tendons in the shoulders, sprains of the elbows and wrists, cracked or broken ribs, and back injuries. All these can cause temporary or permanent damage.
3. When you lie on your back to do the bench press, where should your feet be?

Answer: Flat on the ground

Keep your feet flat on the ground to maintain stability on the bench. Having your feet in the air or spread outward can interfere with the exercise, and possibly injure your lower back.
4. When benching for your first time, it is best to lift how much?

Answer: A very small amount

This is a mistake many people make when trying to lift. It is best to start at a light weight when lifting, then work your way up (especially when you are a lightweight individual).
5. No matter how experienced you are at bench pressing, you should always have someone nearby to act as a what?

Answer: Spotter

A spotter is someone who may assist when lifting, and also helps ensure that no injuries occur. If you have a home gym, it is advised not to lift alone, as you may get stuck and have no around for assistance.
6. Which of the following are signs of overtraining?

Answer: All listed

Overtraining is training so frequently that your body tires and does not get any results. Overtraining is one of the main reasons people do not get results from strength-based exercise: they workout so frequently that their body cannot rest and gain muscle. The best thing to do when you are overtraining is to take some time off from working out.
7. When performing the bench press, where should you be looking?

Answer: At the ceiling

If your head is straight up, you could hit your head on the bar, or injure yourself in some other fashion. Looking to your sides or at the bar can also be hazardous.
8. Pushing your head into the bench isn't harmful, and helps lift more weight.

Answer: False

Pushing your head into the bench can damage your neck, and doesn't help lift much more weight. It is best to tighten the muscles in your neck and shoulder, but you shouldn't do so by putting force into the bench with your head.
9. How should your chest be when you are bench pressing?

Answer: Your chest should be up

Allowing your chest to flatten and your shoulders to go back can damage your shoulders. If your chest was against the bench, you couldn't bench press anyway. So when benching, always keep your chest up and shoulder forward. This will help you bench more weight, keep good stability on the bench, and decrease chance of injury.
10. Bench pressing is the only exercise in powerlifting.

Answer: False

The three powerlifting exercises are bench press, squatting, and deathlift. Squatting is when an individual squats down and holds a barbell on the back. Deathlift is when an individual reaches below and grabs a heavy barbell and lifts until the legs and chest are straight. Although these two tests of strength are done commonly as well, bench pressing is the most popular of the three.
