Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these Dublin stadiums is the headquarters of the GAA?

Answer: Croke Park

The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) named the ground Croke Park in honour of the association's first patron, Archbishop Thomas Croke of Cashel. Croke Park, with a capacity of circa 82,000, is by far the largest sports stadium in Ireland. The All-Ireland finals in both Gaelic football and hurling are always held there.

The GAA had a strict rule in their constitution that Croke Park could only be used for Gaelic sports, but this was relaxed in the early 21st century when Ireland played some soccer and rugby union matches there due to the renovation of the Aviva Stadium.
2. How many players make up a team in both Gaelic football and hurling?

Answer: 15

There are 15 players per team in both Gaelic football and hurling. Up to six substitutions are allowed in football and five in hurling. In the case of a blood injury, a temporary sub may take that player's place until the wound has been addressed.
3. What is the name of the ball used in hurling?

Answer: Sliotar

A sliotar consists of cork covered in leather. It has a diameter of around 70 mm, making it slightly larger than a tennis ball. The stick used to propel the sliotar is called a hurley.
4. Which country did Ireland compete against in the International Rules Series, using Gaelic footballers?

Answer: Australia

The International Series was a hybrid-rules match-up between Ireland and Australia, combining rules of Gaelic football and Aussie rules. The first series took place in 1984, and was held semi-regularly until 2017. The series normally consisted of three matches, and Ireland held a narrow 21-19 advantage in matches won after the 2017 game in Perth.
5. How long is a senior Inter-County Championship match in both hurling and Gaelic football?

Answer: 70 mins

Inter-county matches in both Gaelic football and hurling are 70 minutes long, divided into two halves of 35 minutes. If a knock-out match is drawn, then a replay takes place, if that also ends all-square then extra time of two halves of 10 minutes each are played, followed by a penalty shoot-out as a last resort. An ordinary club game is usually 60 mins long.
6. How many points is a goal worth in both hurling and Gaelic football?

Answer: 3

The goals in both Gaelic football and hurling look like a cross between a soccer goal and a rugby goal, with the lower part having a net. If the ball crosses over the bar between the posts one point is scored, if it enters the netted area below the bar a goal is awarded, worth three points.
7. What is the name of the sport very similar to hurling which is played by women and girls?

Answer: Camogie

The sport of camogie is administered by the Camogie Association rather than the GAA. Whilst very similar to hurling, there are a few slight differences - games last for 60 minutes, the ball is slightly smaller, and a player can hand pass the ball over the bar for a point.
8. While some counties are fairly strong in both Gaelic football and hurling, others like to specialise. Which one of these counties won 36 All-Ireland hurling titles between 1904 and 2015 (it hasn't bothered fielding a football team in the All-Ireland competition since 1982)?

Answer: Kilkenny

Kilkenny, nicknamed "The Cats", play home games at Nowlan Park and wear black and amber shirts. They set a record for most All-Ireland titles in hurling with their 36th crown in 2015, but hadn't enjoyed any success on the football pitch since the early years of the 20th century.
9. Which Irish county has had considerable success on the Gaelic football field, winning 38 All-Ireland crowns between 1903 and 2022, but are very weak on the hurling pitch, their only title coming in 1891?

Answer: Kerry

Kerry, nicknamed "The Kingdom" or "The Green and Gold", play home games at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney and at Austin Stack Park in Tralee. Their football team won a record 38th All-Ireland football title in 2022, but compete at a lower level in hurling, overshadowed by Munster neighbors Cork and Tipperary.
10. In 1901, the All-Ireland hurling championship was won by which team who aren't based on the Emerald Isle?

Answer: London

London GAA are nicknamed "The Exiles", play home games at McGovern Park in Ruislip, and wear green shirts. They play All-Ireland competitons through participation in the Connacht provincial competition. In 1901, they shocked the hurling world, defeating Cork in the final to win the All-Ireland title.
