Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hall of Fame great Hank Aaron played 21 seasons with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves. After breaking Babe Ruth's home run record in 1974, the Braves didn't seem to want him any longer. Aaron was traded to which team for two seasons to finish out his career?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

Aaron hit number 715 in the beginning of the 1974 season which broke Ruth's record. He would hit 20 in that season. The Braves traded Hank to the Brewers for Dave May and a player to be named later. The Milwaukee fans in 1975 saw him in a Brewers' uniform wearing the familiar 44 on his back once again. He hit 22 home runs for the Brewers and retired with 755.
2. After 21 seasons and a Hall of Fame career, slugger Harmon Killebrew was released by the Twins in early 1975. Which team did he sign with a week later, play for them in one season and then retire?

Answer: Kansas City Royals

3. Pitcher Juan Marichal played most of his career with the San Francisco Giants. When they thought he was used up, to which team did they sell his contract?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Giant pitcher Juan Marichal pitched in 14 seasons for San Francisco. In December 1973, the Giants sold his contract to the Red Sox. After going 5-1 in Boston, they released him. The Dodgers then signed Marichal on a one-year contract in 1975, then he retired. Juan never won a Cy Young Award, and not surprisingly with pitchers name Koufax and Gibson in the league.

He did win 25+ games in a season three times. The Hall inducted him in 1983.
4. John Smoltz was a great Braves pitcher. After winning a Cy Young Award and being an All-Star eight times in 20 seasons with the Braves, they granted him free agency in late 2008 and didn't want him anymore. Which team did John sign with for the 2009 season?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

After going only 2-5 with the Red Sox in 2009, they released him midseason and he signed with the Cardinals. He spent the rest of the season with the Cardinals, then they released him. Smoltz then retired with his 213-155 record.
5. After using up the arm of Warren Spahn, the Braves decided they didn't need him any longer. Which team was his contract sold to in 1964?

Answer: New York Mets

Even after winning over 300 games for the Boston/Milwaukee Braves, including being a 20-game winner an amazing 13 times, they let the Mets buy out his contract. The Mets released Warren in 1964 after going 4-12, then he signed with the Giants for the 1975 season and retired.

Although the Cy Young Award did not start until the latter part of his career, he was in the top five voting for the prestigious award while winning one in 1957. Warren was a Hall inductee in 1973, then died in 2003 at the age of 82.
6. Hall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane played for nine seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics and won the AL MVP in 1928,. Connie Mack decided his services weren't wanted anymore after the 1933 season. Who did the Athletics trade with to get Johnny Pasek and cash for Cochrane?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Cochrane showed Mr. Mack and company by winning another AL MVP in his first season with the Tigers. "Black Mike" retired as a Tiger 1937 with his .320 career batting average. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1947.
7. Hall of Famer Steve Carlton pitched in seven seasons with the Cardinals, then 15 glorious years in Philadelphia. In 1986, the Phillies gave him his outright release one month into the season. Which team did he sign with for the remainder of the 1986 season?

Answer: San Francisco Giants

The Giants released Carlton before the season ended so he signed with the White Sox, all in 1986. The White Sox released him after that season and he signed with the Indians for 1987. The Indians traded Steve to the Twins in 1987. By then, Carlton was tired of keeping a suitcase packed.

He retired proud in 1988 with a 329-244 record with 4136 strikeouts. Steve received four Cy Young Awards to his credit. The Hall took him in 1994.
8. Willie Howard Mays was a Hall of Fame outfielder for over 20 seasons with the Giants. In 1972, the team decided it was time to let this token go so they traded him to which team after they used him all up?

Answer: New York Mets

After banging out 646 home runs for the Giants, the "Say Hey Kid" was traded to the Mets for Charlie Williams and cash. He spent two seasons with the Mets and retired in 1973. Six times in Willie's career he hit 40+ home runs in a season. He won the NL MVP in 1954, then again in 1965. His 660 career home runs put him in the Hall of Fame in 1979.
9. Hall of Fame and Dodger slugger Duke Snider played for 16 seasons with the team. After three times being in the top five for the NL MVP voting, and hitting four home runs in two different World Series for the Dodgers, the team felt that they couldn't get anything more from him. Just prior to the 1963 season, who bought Snider's contract from the Dodgers?

Answer: Mets

A year after playing for the Mets in 1963, the Giants bought his contract for the 1964 season. Duke played with them in the season and retired. Snider was the runner-up MVP in 1955 to teammate Roy Campanella. Edwin Donald "Duke" Snider was nicknamed "The Silver Fox". The Hall inducted him in 1980. He died in 2011 at the age of 84.
10. The "Bambino", Babe Ruth, had a storied career. He was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox in his early days, then the infamous selling of his services came after the 1919 season. From there it was baseball history with the New York Yankees until 1935 when they released him. Who did he sign a contract with for his final season in baseball?

Answer: Boston Braves

Ruth had hoped to get a coaching or managing position with the Yankees. After a few seasons he was tired of their talk and he asked for his release and received it. He signed with the Boston Braves with false promises of him coaching the team, then possibly managing it also. That never came about and he retired in Boston with the Braves.
