Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was England's manager for the tournament?

Answer: Bobby Robson

Robson was one of England's most successful managers, taking them to a World Cup quarterfinal and semi-final. Ramsey led England between 1963 and 1974, Hoddle between 1996 and 1999, whilst Clough controversially (to some) never did.
2. What was unusual about the selection of Steve Bull in the England squad?

Answer: He had never played top level football

Bull was a prolific goal scorer with Wolverhampton Wanderers, but at Second rather than First Division level. He scored three goals in the friendlies leading up to the tournament, but did not score during the finals nor subsequently for England.
3. Peter Shilton retired at the end of the tournament with a record number of England appearances. How many did he have?

Answer: 125

Shilton made his debut for England way back in 1970. His mammoth total of 125 caps is all the more remarkable given that, for part of his England career, he alternated with Ray Clemence who himself amassed 61 caps.
4. England topped their group in the opening stages. Netherlands and Ireland finished just below them with identical records. How was it decided who would finish 2nd and who 3rd?

Answer: By the drawing of lots

I guess it's another case of the luck of the Irish. They went on to be beaten by hosts Italy in the quarter-final. Netherlands lost to West Germany in the following round.
5. What was significant about the goal that David Platt scored to knock out Belgium in the Round of 16?

Answer: It came one minute from the end of extra-time

It was a spectacular goal with Platt swiveling in the penalty area to volley home a Paul Gascoigne free-kick that was falling behind him. In the 1990s, Platt went on to play for three Italian clubs at Bari, Juventus, and Sampdoria.
6. This was the tournament where an African nation could have reached the semi-finals for the first time. Who did England narrowly beat 3-2 in the quarter-final to prevent this from happening?

Answer: Cameroon

Cameroon were the surprise package of the finals, beating holders Argentina in the initial game and topping their group. In 40-year old Roger Milla, they could boast one of the oldest players to play in the finals. England played Egypt at the group stages.
7. For which of these activities will Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne most be remembered?

Answer: Crying

Gascoigne's booking in the semi-final reduced him to tears as he knew he would be suspended from the final. The resulting photograph has become one of sports enduring images.
8. Who scored England's equaliser in the semi-final against West Germany?

Answer: Gary Lineker

At this stage of his career, Gary Lineker looked set to pass Bobby Charlton's record of 49 goals. Ultimately, he was to retire one goal short.
9. England lost the semi-final to West Germany 4-3 on a penalty shootout. Which two England players missed their kicks?

Answer: Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce

Years later, they would appear alongside Gareth Southgate (who suffered a similar fate at the 1996 European Championships) in a TV commercial parodying their misses. The commercial was for Pizza Hut which seems logical given the Italian connection. Both Pearce (Manchester City and Nottingham Forest as caretaker manager) and Southgate (Middlesbrough) went on to manage Premier League clubs in England.
10. Who out of England's squad was born in Jamaica, and later went on to manage the Jamaican international team?

Answer: John Barnes

Barnes was born in Kingston in 1963 and made 79 international appearances for England between 1983 and 1995. He took over the Jamaican squad in November 2008, but it was a short tenure as he resigned in 2009 to manage Tranmere Rovers.
