Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sixteen nations made it through to the Tournament, held jointly by Switzerland and Austria. But which country were the holders of the trophy, having won the tournament held in Portugal in 2004?

Answer: Greece

The Greek team surprised everybody, not least themselves, by winning the 2004 Tournament. They proved that the best team(s) do not always win and, more especially, how important it is to have a team spirit and comeraderie which when added to some good fortune, can carry a team on to win against huge adversity.
2. Did either of the host nations for the tournament, Switzerland and Austria, win any of the six games they played between them in the group phase?

Answer: Yes, the Swiss won their final group match against Portugal

It was always going to be difficult for both the hosts to get out of their respective groups and so it proved, although the Austrians could and perhaps should have gotten draws at the very least against both Croatia and Poland, games in which they were let down by poor finishng and some bad luck in front of goal.

The Swiss did win their final group game at the expense of a Portuguese reserve team (the Portuguese had won both their games thus far and so rested their senior players, thereby giving the Swiss a chance to get a victory).
3. How many goals did the Netherlands score in their opening two group matches against the winners (Italy) and runner-up (France) from the World Cup held two years earlier?

Answer: 7

The Dutch swept aside the Italians 3-0 (although the scoreline flattered them a little) before going one better against a stuttering French side 4-1.
4. Which team scored the first goal of the tournament?

Answer: Czech Republic

The Czech Republic won 1-0 against Switzerland in the opening game of the 2008 Finals.
5. If you were watching a game on television and saw Luka Modric tackle Jacek Krzynowek, which game were you watching?

Answer: Croatia v Poland

Both are talented midfielders, Modric for Croatia and Krzynowek for Poland. Modric had just joined Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premiership whilst Krzynowek played in the German Bundesliga with Wolfsburg.
6. After the first round of group matches, only one team failed to get a single point, losing all three of their games. Which team was this?

Answer: Greece

Greece were the only team to lose all three games, but at least they qualified for the tournament and were able to defend the trophy they won 4 years previously.
7. At the start of the 2008 tournament, how many players played for club sides from the English Premiership?

Answer: 43

England failed to qualify as a nation, but there were 43 players from the Premiership in the squads of the 16 nations who did qualify.
8. Which player scored a hat-trick in the opening group games (he scored 3 times in his sides opening 4-1 win)?

Answer: David Villa (Spain)

Spain won their opening group game against Russia 4-1, with Villa getting a hat-trick.
9. Eight cities in Austria and Switzerland were used as venues for the games. Which one of the following cities had the largest stadium?

Answer: Vienna

With a capacity of 53,000, the Ernst-Happel Stadion in Vienna was the largest. Unusually, it was not the home ground of any Austrian club side although was used by Rapid Vienna or Austria Vienna, if they are playing in a UEFA competition such as the Champions League or UEFA Cup and need a larger capacity that their own smaller grounds can offer. Switzerland's largest stadium is the St Jakob Park in Basel, which held 42,500.
10. Of the four countries listed below, three had the oldest squads and one had the youngest. Can you name the country with the youngest squad?

Answer: Russia

With an average age of just over 26.1, the Russians were the youngest side at the tournament. By contrast, the oldest team was Sweden.
