Like France, the Spaniards were undefeated in three matches, but only won one game (against Romania) while drew against France and Bulgaria.
6. GROUP C: Russia and the Czech Republic produced the highest scoring match of the tournament. How many goals were scored in total?

Answer: 6

Played at Anfield, the game finished at 3-3. The Czechs had taken the early lead, with Suchoparek (5') and Kuka (19') giving the Czechs the advantage into half-time The Russians fought back in the second half, with goals to Mostovoi (49'), Tetradze (54') and then what appeared a game-sealing goal from Beschastnykh (85').

But with little time remaining, Smicer scored in the 88' to level the scores again in what was the best game of the tournament.
7. Germany were the only team to go through the group stages without conceding a goal.

Answer: True

The German's defence was like an unbreakable wall, with wins over the Czech Republic (2-0) and Russia (3-0) and a goalless draw with Italy. Compare that to the Russians who ended the tournament with 4 goals scored but 8 against!
8. GROUP D: Three teams were defeated by the scoreline of 3-0. Who was the only team of Group D not to suffer that defeat?

Answer: Portugal

Portugal were the only team not to suffer this sort of humiliation and went through the group stages undefeated. Croatia defeated Denmark 3-0, Portugal then defeated Croatia 3-0 in the next game, while Denmark ended Turkey's dismal campaign with a 3-0 win in the final group game.
9. Despite three losses, Turkey still scored 2 goals.

Answer: False

The Turks were the only team never to put the ball in the back of the opponent's net during the group stages. They lost 1-0 to Croatia, 1-0 to Portugal then 3-0 to Denmark.

11. England and Spain played one of two goalless quarter-finals that were decided by penalty shoot-outs. What was the scoreline?

Answer: 4-2 England win

The game was not without its chances for both teams but these were not taken and the game ended at 0-0 after 90 minutes and extra-time.
12. France and the Netherlands played out a relatively dull 0-0 draw as well in the quarter-finals stages. The French won by what scoreline from the penalty shootout?

Answer: 5-4

France progressed to the semi-finals winning the penalty shoot-out 5-4. Neither side took much advantage of their powerful forwards, instead relying on their superb defense.
13. In the final quarter-final, the Czech Republic upset another fancied side, defeating Portugal 1-0. Who scored the goal?

Answer: Karel Poborsky

The goal in the 53rd minute sealed the win. They would go on to face France in the semi-finals missing the above three non-goalscorers who all missed the game due to suspension.
14. SEMI-FINALS: In what has been described as a classic, Germany and England finished at 1-1 after 90 minutes/extra-time and the Germans won 6-5 on penalties. Who slotted home the final penalty for the Germans?

Answer: Andreas Moller

The game was a virtual replay of the classic FIFA World Cup semi-final of Italia 1990. Gareth Southgate was the player to miss the 6th shot for England, while Andreas Moller calmly slotted his 6th shot to send Germany into another Cup final. Kuntz was the goal-scorer during the 90 minutes for Germany.
15. The other semi-final between the Czech Republic and France also went to penalties. What was the scoreline at the end of 90 minutes and extra-time?

Answer: 0-0

Predictable scoreline, particularly from the Czech's who were missing four players through suspension. But France should have produced more and were bitterly disappointed to be bundled out 6-5 in the penalty shoot-out.
16. FINAL: Germany and Czech Republic met for the second time in the final of the UEFA European Championships. Where was the final played?

Answer: Wembley

The German's would have been nervous about playing at Wembley, having lost the 1966 World Cup Final to England at the same ground. History was also against them, losing the 1976 Euro final to the same team, while also losing to Denmark only four years previously.
17. The Czech's were the first to score in the 59th minute thanks to Patrik Berger. How did he score this goal?

Answer: From the penalty spot

It seemed the Czech's were out to repeat history when Berger slotted home the penalty after Mattias Sammer brought down Karel Poborsky in the penalty area.
18. German coach Berti Vogts brought on a substitution who changed the game. Who did he put on the field?

Answer: Oliver Bierhoff

Bierhoff, one of the few successful German players plying his trade out of Germany, changed the game almost immediately. He scored his first goal in the 73rd minute with a towering header over the Czech goalkeeper. He then sealed the win for the German's in extra-time in the 95th minute.
19. Who ended the tournament as top scorer?

Answer: Alan Shearer

Despite missing out on the final, Shearer still managed to put away five goals in five matches for England. Klinsmann and Sukur scored three goals each.
20. Euro 1996 was the third time that the Germans had walked away with the trophy.

Answer: True

Up to 1996, Germany were the only team to have won the tournament more than once, winning the title in 1972, 1980 and 1996.
