Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "We're going to win," Jets' quarterback Joe Namath said about the game. "I guarantee it." When did he say those famous words?

Answer: At a banquet three days before the game

Accepting an award at a Miami Touchdown Club banquet the Thursday before the Super Bowl, Namath was heckled by a Colts fan. He stared at the heckler and made his famous prediction. Although the prediction is now legendary, it was not widely reported at the time, with most newspapers either not mentioning it the next day, or making only a passing reference to it.
2. While dining out during Super Bowl week, some Jets were confronted by two Colts players, one of whom challenged Namath to a fight. How did Namath break the tension?

Answer: Said that he'd sit in the middle of the field and cry if the Jets lost

At dinner in Ft. Lauderdale a week before the game, Namath and his Jets roommate Jim Hudson were approached by two Colts players. Colt defensive end and kicker Lou Michaels grew more and more angry with Namath, who kept talking about how the Jets would beat the Colts. Michaels finally asked Namath in frustration what he'd do if the Colts won. Namath replied, "I'll sit right down in the middle of the field and I'll cry." The tension broken, Namath invited the Colts to join them for dinner, paid for the meal, and gave them a ride back to their hotel.
3. In the week before the game, Namath created a stir by claiming that several AFL quarterbacks were better than Earl Morrall, the Colts' quarterback who was NFL MVP that season. Which quarterback below was not on his list?

Answer: Len Dawson

Namath said that five AFL quarterbacks - Bob Griese of the Dolphins, John Hadl of the Chargers, Daryle Lamonica of the Raiders, plus himself and his backup Babe Parilli - were better than Earl Morrall. The Colts were not pleased.
4. Which team crossed midfield first in the game, and what was the result of their drive?

Answer: Colts, missed field goal

The Jets took the kickoff and moved 15 yards in five plays before punting. The Colts then did what everyone expected them to, moving easily down the field (their first three plays were a 19-yard pass, and two runs that gained 17 yards) to the Jets' 19.

But Morrall then threw two incomplete passes and was pressured into scrambling for no gain on third down. Lou Michaels' 27-yard field goal attempt was wide right.
5. What was the first big break of the game?

Answer: The Colts recovered a Jet fumble at the NY 12

Still in the first quarter, the Colts punted to the Jets' four-yard-line. George Sauer fumbled a third-down pass and the Colts recovered on the Jet 12. Three plays later, with the Colts on the Jet four, Morrall threw an interception into the end zone.
6. Earl Morrall threw three interceptions. Which statement below does not describe one of them?

Answer: Threw straight into a Jet player at the Colt 27

Morrall drove the Colts inside the Jet 20 on three occasions in the first half, but his three interceptions and Lou Michaels' two missed field goals left them trailing the Jets 7-0 at halftime.
7. The Colts received the second half kickoff and started on their own 25. How did the drive end?

Answer: Fumbled on the first play

On the Colts' first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Tom Matte ran eight yards and fumbled, giving the Jets the ball on the Colt 33. The Jets kicked a field goal to go up 10-0. Baltimore's next drive was two incomplete passes and a sack, and Shula benched Morrall at that point.
8. Frustrated with Earl Morrall's performance, Colts coach Don Shula brought Johnny Unitas into the game in the second half. Once Unitas entered the game, how did the Colts fare against the Jets in each of these statistics: points scored, passing yards, rushing yards, first downs, time of possession?

Answer: Colts led in points, passing yards, and first downs; Jets led in everything else

Unitas entered the game late in the third quarter; Namath didn't throw a fourth-quarter pass. Behind Unitas, the Colts outscored (7-0) and out-passed (110-50 yards) the Jets and gained more first downs (8-5), but the Jets outrushed the Colts (58-45) and held the ball longer (10:38 to 8:20).
9. Whose 160 yards from scrimmage topped all players?

Answer: Matt Snell

Many have said that Snell's 121 yards in 30 carries and 40 yards on four pass receptions made him the real Most Valuable Player of the game. Namath was MVP, but of the first 25 quarterbacks named MVP of a Super Bowl, Namath was the only one to not throw a touchdown pass in the game. The Jets' only touchdown came on a run - by Snell.
10. The day after the game, Baltimore safety Rick Volk received a bouquet of flowers from Joe Namath. Why?

Answer: Volk was hospitalized from injuries suffered in the game

Matt Snell smashed into Volk in the Jets' first possession of the game, sending a groggy Volk to the sidelines. Volk continued to play before being carried from the field after a fourth-quarter collision. Later that evening, he went into convulsions in his hotel room and was hospitalized. Volk had a key interception in the Colts' 16-13 Super Bowl win over the Cowboys two years later, and continued to play in the NFL through most of the 70s.
