Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Someone has yelled at you to "forecheck". What does "forecheck" mean?

Answer: Attack the opposing player before he crosses his blue line

When you "forecheck", you are trying to force the opposing defenseman to give up a weak pass or throw it down the ice for an icing. Usually, the defenseman sends an off-target pass.
2. You've "rung the iron". What have you just done?

Answer: Your shot has glanced off the post

"Rung the iron" means you've made the distinct "ping" sound of frozen vulcanized rubber colliding with solid iron.
3. You skate to the bench after an "offside". What is an "offside"?

Answer: Your player goes into the opposing zone before the puck

"Offside" is a rule that makes sure you don't hang around the opposing team's goalie. The result is a whistle and a face-off just outside of the blue line.
4. Someone yells at you to watch the "seagull" (also known as a "cherry-picker). Who are you looking for?

Answer: The player behind your defense

The term "seagull" refers to the way seagulls often revolve and fly near people with food.
5. You just got angry and "two-handed" someone. You are going off the ice for what penalty?

Answer: Slashing

When you "two-hand" someone, you slide both hands to the knob end of the stick and swing like a baseball bat at the player that's ticking you off.
6. You're skating into your end after the opposing player dumps it in. Your goalie yells at you "Man on!". What's he trying to tell you?

Answer: An opposing player is skating right behind you

The term "man on" is yelled from many athletes, not only hockey. When he yells this at you, you can realize whether to fire it out quickly or to handle the puck and look for a pass.
7. Your coach tells you that you're now on a "power-play". What has he just told you?

Answer: The other team has taken a penalty

When you're on a "power-play", your team has one more player than the other team. This gives you a better chance to score.
8. Your goalie's being "screened" by another player. What is that player doing?

Answer: Standing in front of your goalie to obstruct his vision

When a player "screens" a goalie, his job is to make sure the goalie cannot see the puck. It also helps to "screen" the goalie during a slap shot, as well as to try to tip it in.
9. Your teammates yell at you to get to the "slot". Where's that?

Answer: Between the two hash-marks, in front of the net

The "slot" is a prime location for rebounds and tip shots. It is also very hard to stay in there, as the opposing goalie and his two defensemen try to get you out, with force.
10. The game's over. You've just "put on a clinic". What have you done?

Answer: Beaten the opposing team badly

A clinic is somewhere people teach many others a certain job. To "put on a clinic" means to show the other team how to play hockey.
