1. Which of the following names was never used by the Cleveland Guardians franchise?

Answer: Cleveland Spiders

The Spiders, who had the great Cy Young on the mound, were a National League team that went defunct after the 1899 season. When the American League began in 1901, Cleveland submitted the Blues, then became the Bronchos in 1902, the Naps in 1903, then finally the Indians in 1915.

The Indians' name came from the first American Indian to play in Cleveland. He was Louis Sockalexis who played for the Cleveland Spiders of the National League in 1897. The franchise became the Cleveland Guardians in 2022.

Answer: Boston Braves

The franchise was one of the original National League teams in 1876. Ruth played for the Braves in his final season in 1935. He banged out 714 career home runs, with his final six as a Brave.

The Tigers and the White Sox were the only two original American League teams that never changed their name throughout the entire 20th century. The Tigers' first World Series was in 1907, then made two more trips in 1908 and 1909. They lost all three however. 1935 saw them win it all against the Cubs.
4. The Los Angeles Dodgers franchise joined the National League in 1890 as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. The franchise began in the American Association 1884. What was their name in that league?

Answer: Brooklyn Atlantics

After starting their franchise as the Atlantics, the team changed their name to the Brooklyn Grays, then the Bridegrooms. The franchise moved to the west coast in 1958.
5. The Baltimore Orioles were not the Baltimore Orioles that began with the new American League in 1901. Which team did that 1901 franchise eventually become?

Answer: New York Yankees

The franchise began as the Orioles in 1901 and 1902. The team then moved to New York and became the Highlanders until 1912. The Yankee name came in 1913.
6. The Dodgers franchise was named after their manager from 1914-1931. What was this Brooklyn team name?

The team was named after manager Wilbert Robinson for those seasons. They rostered such greats in the names of Casey Stengel, Zack Wheat, and Jack Coombs. Robbie took his club to two World Series but couldn't cash it in when it counted. Max Carey took the reins of the club in 1932, and the Dodger name came back again.

The team dropped Anaheim in 2017 and became (once again) the LA Angels.

The franchise began in the American Association in 1882 as the Brown Stockings. In 1892, they found themselves in the National League as the St. Louis Browns. They changed their name to the Perfectos for the 1899 season, then became the Cardinals in 1900.
10. The Washington Nationals began their franchise as which team?

Answer: Montreal Expos

The franchise was originally an expansion team in 1969 as the Expos. The Canadian team never made it to a World Series. They moved to Washington in 2005 and, under the helm of Frank Robinson, the Nationals went .500 with a 81-81 record.
