Answer: Thorpe scored a century in the game

In the first innings Thorpe was dismissed for 6. In the second innings he joined the ranks of those who had scored a century on their test debut, hitting 114* in an England total of 422-6 declared. The match was drawn, but Thorpe had announced his arrival on the test scene in no uncertain terms.

He was only the fourteenth player to do this for England, and the first since Frank Hayes in 1973.

Answer: New Zealand

Thorpe scored 200* in the first test against against New Zealand in March 2002. At that time it was the seventh fastest double century by balls received - he hit it from 231 deliveries. England went on to win the match by 98 runs, and Thorpe was the Man of the Match.

In the first test against New Zealand at Christchurch, England amassed a second innings total of 468-6 declared. At one point they had slumped to 106-5, but Thorpe and Flintoff then put on 281 for the sixth wicket. When Flintoff was finally dismissed for 137, England were 387-6.

England dismissed the West Indies for 224, and then were themselves dismissed for 226. Hoggard (4-35), Harmison (3-34) and Flintoff (2-20) then reduced the West Indies to 94 all out. They reached their total of 93 for the loss of only two wickets. They were the first visiting team to win three tests in a series in the Caribbean, and the first England team to win a series in the West Indies since the tour of 1967-68.

On 7th January 1995, Thorpe was declared the Man of the Match for his 89 against Zimbabwe in Brisbane. England scored 200 and defeated Zimbabwe by 26 runs. Thorpe batted for 155 minutes and hit 7 fours in his innings. After the match he was admitted to hospital, suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration.

A large crowd was outside the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, wanting to get in to watch the match. As the ground was full, and the crowd would not leave, police had to use tear gas and some filtered onto the ground. Thorpe scored 41 before being run out; Pakistan won the match by 6 wickets.

Thorpe did not bowl very often in one day internationals - in his first 89 games he only bowled in five matches. He bowled four overs against India in the 1996 Texaco Trophy and dismissed Rathore and Ganguly.
