Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first number retired by the Mets belonged to Casey Stengel who was their first manager. What was "The Old Perfessor's" number?

Answer: 37

Casey Stengel actually had his number 37 retired by both the Yankees and the Mets. The Yankees did this based on his leading them to ten American League pennants and seven World Series titles in twelve years. Although he had less success with the Mets, he gave them a personality and made them competitive in their early years.
2. One of the most popular Mets ever was Edwin "Mookie" Wilson. What number did he wear during his time with Mets?

Answer: one

Mookie Wilson was a talented outfielder and is considered one of the nicest people to have played in the Major Leagues. He was also part of one of the most famous plays in World Series history. It was his ground ball through the legs of Boston's Bill Buckner that gave the Mets the win in game six of the 1986 World Series after trailing by two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
3. The second number retired by the Mets was for a manager. What number was retired for the late Gil Hodges in 1973?

Answer: 14

The quiet but firm leadership of Gil Hodges transformed the Mets from lovable losers to contenders and finally to champions in 1969. He led the Mets to two more fairly successful seasons before his untimely death on Easter Sunday in 1972.
4. Nowadays it is fashionable for great players joining a new team to pay a lesser player to give up a uniform number. However back in 1972 a marginal player was expected to give up his number for a future Hall of Famer. This was the case for Jim Beauchamp who gave up which number for the immortal Willie Mays?

Answer: 24

Willie Mays was brought back to New York to finish his career by Mrs. Joan Payson who owned the team. Beauchamp gave up his number 24 to the future Hall of Famer. Beauchamp was a marginal player (10 seasons, 393 games played, 153 hits, 5 home runs and 90 RBI). Players with those type of stats did not make waves when asked to switch uniform numbers.
5. If you subtract Bud Harrelson's number from fellow 1969 champion Tommie Agee, you get the number of 1986 champion, Keith Hernandez. What number was on Keith's uniform?

Answer: 17

Agee wore 20 and subtracting Harrelson's number three you get Keith's number 17. When he was traded to the Mets in the middle of the 1983 season he could not wear the number he wore with the Cardinals as it was retired for Casey Stengel. When asked why he took 17 Keith replied it was the first available number that had a seven in it.
6. In 1986 Jesse Orosco closed out both the National League pennant and the World Series by striking out the last batter. What number was on his back when he did this?

Answer: 47

Jesse came to the Mets in a 1979 trade with the Minnesota Twins. After pitching for the Mets during the lean years of the early 1980s, he earned his place in team history by closing out game seven of the 1986 World Series. Jesse pitched in the major leagues until the ripe old age of 46.
7. In 1969 the Mets were led by their great pitching staff. The 1986 championship team also used this formula. The best pitcher on the staff was a young phenom named Dwight Gooden. What number identified him on the scorecard?

Answer: 16

Dwight "Doctor K" Gooden burst onto the scene as Rookie of the Year in 1984. His second season was his masterpiece: 24 wins with only four losses, 268 strikeouts, and a 1.53 ERA which resulted in him winning the Cy Young award.
8. John Franco was a premier relief pitcher for the Mets. John wore number 31 until the Mets acquired Mike Piazza in May of 1998. What number did John decide to wear from that point on?

Answer: 45

John Franco pitched for 20 plus seasons amassing over 400 saves. Originally he wore number 31 but switched when the Mets acquired Mike Piazza who had worn that number with the Dodgers. He switched to number 45 which once belonged to another great Met lefty reliever named Tug McGraw.
9. The last piece of the 1986 championship team was the acquisition of catcher Gary Carter. What number did he don for the Mets?

Answer: eight

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter came to the Mets from Montreal after the 1984 season. In addition to being a power hitter, he was also a premier defensive catcher and handler of pitchers. Sadly "The Kid" passed away in 2012 at the young age of 57.
10. The final question deals with the Met player known as "The Franchise" who played for the Mets from 1967 to 1977 and again in 1983. What number was on his back when he took the field?

Answer: 41

Tom Seaver was the player who started to give the Mets credibility. He was Rookie of the Year in 1967. In 1969 he posted a 25 and 7 record, won the Cy Young award, and lead the Mets to the championship. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1992 with the highest percentage of votes, (98.84%) until 2016 when Ken Griffey Jr. was elected with 99.3% of the vote.
