Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What 20th Century hitter was the only player to hit at least 100 RBI's, hit 35 home runs, and compile 200 hits in 3 consecutive seasons?

Answer: Jim Rice

The great Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox was the first and only player in the 20th Century to do this. He did this with blistering seasons in 1977, 1978, and 1979. He had at minimum 110 RBI's, 35 home runs, and 200 hits in each of those three seasons.
2. Which of the following players had 13 consecutive seasons of hitting more than 100 RBI's in a season?

Answer: Jimmy Foxx

Jimmy Foxx did this from 1929-1941. The only other player to do this in 13 consecutive seasons was the immortal Lou Gehrig from 1926-1938. Both of these great players are in their own league. RBI's became an official Major League statistic in 1920.
3. With a career minimum of 4,000 at-bats in the 20th Century, what player holds the record for the fewest walks?

Answer: Jesus Alou

This one of the great Alou brothers appeared in 4,345 times at bat and walked a measley 138 times. A good eye and the non willingness for charity, no player has come close to this ratio. Jesus played with different teams from 1963-1979. Can you name his brothers?
4. Which of the following Chicago White Sox defected to play in Japan when the 1994 strike-shortened season was in jeopardy of being cancelled?

Answer: Julio Franco

Both Franco and right fielder Darrin Jackson were flustered with the three-way battle in the 1994 season with Cleveland and Kansas City, and now with no progress in the strikes talk, they both went to Japan to play. Joey Cora signed with the Mariners and Jack McDowell signed with the Yankees. Manager Gene Lamont inherited some severe holes in his lineup.
5. Who was the first pitcher to strike out 19 batters in a game in the 20th Century?

Answer: Steve Carlton

With the mound 60 feet 6 inches from the plate, Carlton of St.Louis did this on September 15, 1969 against the pennant-winning Mets. In 1970 Tom Seaver of the Mets had revenge and became the second pitcher to do this. In the American League Nolan Ryan fanned 18 in 1974. He was the first American Leaguer to fan 18 batters twice.
6. Willie Mays retired in the 8th spot for career RBI's. How many times season RBI titles did he win?

Answer: 0

Mays never led a season with an RBI total. He finished with 1902 career RBI's, only five RBI's short of 7th place Eddie Murray with 1907, and 20 behind the great Jimmy Foxx. Mays played from 1951 to 1973.
7. Which of the following 20th Century pitchers struck out his first 7 batters in his Major League debut?

Answer: Sammy Stewart-1978

The Baltimore Oriole rookie pitcher did this in his first Major League game on September 1, 1978 against the Cleveland Indians. He was yanked later in the game for loss of control and was knocked out early in his next start. The following season Earl Weaver delegated him to the bullpen.
8. What 20th Century rookie pitcher holds the record for most strikeouts in a game?

Answer: Kerry Wood

Wood struck out an amazing 20 batters while helping the Chicago Cubs to the win on May 6, 1998.
9. Prior to Randy Johnson, what 20th Century player was the tallest player in the Major League?

Answer: Johnny Gee

Gee at 6' 9' won only 7 games in the National League from 1939-1946. He was an inch taller than Conley who was the most successful tall player. Conley won 91 games in the 50's and 60's for the Braves, Phillies, and Red Sox. Lee Meadows was not tall, but was the first Major Leaguer to wear glasses in 1915 with the Cardinals.
10. What 20th Century deaf-mute won 21 games in a season for the Giants?

Answer: Luther Taylor

All of the above players were handicapped baseball players, but Luther 'Dummy' Taylor won 21 games for the New York Giants in 1904 and 112 games over his 9 year career. 5'4' Dummy Hoy was the only other deaf-mute to play pro ball in the 20th Century.
